Little leaders, Big impact: Meet Sportily’s PlayMakers

What does leadership look like when you're 10 years old? For James, Head of Leadership Development, it starts with giving children the chance to build confidence, encourage others and make a difference. That's exactly what we're seeing through our PlayMakers Programme, where Year 5 pupils are becoming PlayMakers and transforming playtimes in their schools.
The PlayMakers Programme is delivered in primary schools across Gloucestershire and is designed for children aged 9 to 11. It gives pupils the opportunity to develop confidence, communication and teamwork while learning how to organise and lead games for other children in their school community.
After completing their training, pupils work towards the Leadership Skills Foundation PlayMaker Award, a nationally recognised sports leadership certificate that equips them with the knowledge and confidence to lead fun, inclusive activities for their peers and younger pupils during break and lunchtime.
What makes the programme particularly special is that it extends beyond the classroom. Once trained, PlayMakers put their skills into practice by leading games in the playground, supported by Sportily coaches and school staff. Over time, they grow in confidence, take increasing ownership of their roles and help create a more active, positive and inclusive environment for everyone to enjoy.
For many pupils, this is their first experience of leadership. They learn how to communicate clearly, encourage others, solve problems and take responsibility, developing skills that will benefit them well beyond primary school.
The impact is felt across the whole school. The programme helps create more active and inclusive playtimes, encourages positive relationships between year groups and ensures more children are engaged in enjoyable physical activity throughout the school day.
Since January, we have awarded 79 PlayMaker certificates to Year 5 pupils across Gloucestershire, recognising their commitment to serving their school communities.
Each certificate represents a young person who has chosen to step forward, support others and make playtimes more enjoyable for their peers. Along the way, they are developing confidence, resilience and leadership skills that will continue to shape their future.
For many, this is just the beginning. As they grow, they can continue their journey through our Leadership Development Academy, which provides opportunities to develop as sports leaders, volunteers and coaches.
One of the most exciting aspects of the PlayMakers Programme is its lasting impact. In Year 6, many PlayMakers go on to mentor the next cohort of Year 5 pupils, passing on their knowledge and helping to establish a culture of peer leadership that continues year after year.
By investing in young leaders today, we're helping to build confident, compassionate and capable young people who will make a positive difference in their schools, communities and beyond.
Congratulations to all 79 PlayMaker Award recipients so far this year. We can't wait to see the difference they continue to make as they inspire others through their leadership.
