Happy Christmas from everyone at Sportily

The story of Jesus' birth is celebrated by millions across the world during this special season. We will remember again the manger, the wise men, and the ornate gifts. We imagine the bright star the wise men followed. But another story unfolded. Sport and Faith Coach Christo shares this with us:

We read in Matthew 2:1-17 how the wise men stopped to talk with King Herod. The king asked them to report back to him when they found the location of Jesus' birth. King Herod had just one thing in mind – to harm Jesus. After the wise men made it to Jesus, they returned home on a different route because of a dream warning them not to return to Herod.

Jesus and his family had to flee to Egypt. The King gave orders to kill all the young boys in Bethlehem and surrounding areas. During this time, these communities would have likely been scared and overwhelmed. Peace was probably the last thing they were thinking about.

Whether you are experiencing joy or hardship this season, the message of Christmas speaks to all of us, regardless of our circumstances.

Do you experience the peace of Christmas? Or is it impossible? Circumstances, world events, relational tensions and grief can make this season difficult for some.

If you feel alone, here is the message of Christmas. You are not alone! At the time of His birth, people were expecting a Saviour who would be a fierce warrior who would use violence to bring justice and rescue God's people. While Jesus brought about justice and rescue, it was through love and compassion. So, instead of violence, he allowed Himself to be crucified on a cross to save us from our sin. He received all the pain and hate the world had to offer. With His resurrection, the power of violence, hatred and division suffered a fatal blow.

His life brought us peace only God can give, and He offers it to us:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

This peace isn't fake. It is not ignoring the problems in our world. This peace Jesus gives is a true gift that brings us closer to people around us. It calms our inner turmoil; it calms our busy minds, and it reminds us who is in control.

In a world where we face uncertainty, this message of peace offers hope and comfort, reminding us that we are not alone, no matter how difficult things may seem.

May we this holiday season fix our eyes on Jesus, remembering that He is in control and that we will experience this peace he promises to provide. May we as Christians be the people who bring a sense of calm, wholeness, renewal and hope to every situation and relationship in our lives.

What’s the real reason for the Christmas season?

Dare we say the Christmas season is upon us? Whether you put your decorations up in early November or wait until December 24th, we invite you to take a moment this Christmas to reflect on the real reason for the season. Sport and Faith Coach Ydson shares his thoughts:

"I've been on a journey lately, pondering the perfect moment to start listening to Christmas music and watching holiday movies. On November 7th, I had a moment that felt like an invitation into the season: while walking through the Highnam churchyard, I watched leaves gently drifting down, and suddenly, "The Snow is Falling" started playing in my mind. It's been on repeat ever since—a hint of the season’s arrival, like an inner nudge towards Christmas.

But as much as we look forward to the joy of gathering, exchanging gifts, and embracing festive traditions, let’s remember Jesus, the heart of the season. Many Christians believe that Christmas is the story of God’s immense love for us, made real through Jesus’s birth. This season is about more than cosy scenes and cheerful songs; it’s about pausing to reflect on God’s gift of hope, peace, and salvation through Christ.

So, as the early hints of Christmas appear around us, let’s be reminded of why we celebrate. Whether you’re already diving into the festivities or savouring the wait, may each moment draw us closer to the One who is the reason for this beautiful season. When do you feel that nudge toward the season?"

Did you know that there are fewer girls participating in Sport?

We caught up with Sport and Faith Leader, Jo, who's also our Female Participation lead, to learn more about the challenges girls face in sports and how her work aims to encourage their continued involvement.

"In my last blog (which you can read here), I discussed some of my personal experiences growing up in the world of gymnastics. As I move to my next blog, I thought it would be good to share some of the reasons why girls drop out of sport and what we can do to support them in getting involved.

Here are some reasons discovered by the Women’s Sports Foundation after 25 years of research:

Why girls drop out:

Lack of access:

Girls have 1.3 million fewer opportunities to play secondary school sports than boys. Limited physical education in schools and fewer sports opportunities at both secondary school and college mean girls often have to look elsewhere—which may not exist or may cost more. There is also often a lack of adequate playing facilities near their homes, making it more difficult for girls to engage in sports.

What we're doing to change this:

At Sportily, we offer a wide variety of inclusive opportunities, such as breakfast clubs, after-school clubs, Leadership Academies, Hangouts, and more—most of which are open to all, as we’re committed to ensuring girls feel fully welcome and included.

Why not #giveitago? Check out the website to see what activities are taking place in your area by clicking here.

Through sports, girls learn important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and confidence. Friendships and memories are made, alongside the physical benefits of staying active. Many of our Sportily clubs are free or have a small charge. If you'd like to join an event but are experiencing financial difficulties, we welcome you to email us, and we’ll do our utmost to provide a discount code.

Why they drop out:

Decreased quality of experience:

As girls grow up, the quality of their sports experience may decline. The facilities might not be as good as those for boys, and playing times may not be optimal. In some communities, quality, trained coaches are lacking, our coaches may focus more on boys’ programmes, which have more funding. Equipment and sports kits aren’t always provided and can be expensive which can diminish girls' enjoyment and growth in the sport. In short, sports just aren’t “fun” anymore.

What we're doing to change this:

At Sportily, we have trained sports coaches who use engaging games from the Boing Curriculum. We believe in helping each young person progress through tailored coaching and feedback that highlights strengths and areas for growth, enabling them to reach their full potential. We're committed to ensuring that girls have the same access to quality equipment, coaches, and resources as boys. Our coaches incorporate life skills and, at times, faith-based discussions that encourage young people to engage in meaningful conversations, building social and enquiry skills.

Why they drop out:

Lack of positive role models:

Today’s girls are constantly shown images focused on external beauty, rather than strong female athletic role models. For some, fitting into this mould seems more important than standing out. Peer pressure is challenging at any age, and without strong encouragement to participate in sports, girls may drop out altogether.

What we're doing to change this:

Sportily aims to inspire women to participate in sports, not only through our amazing female coaches but also by inviting successful and accomplished athletes to our events. This encourages girls to get more involved in sports and join a Sportily club—whether it’s netball, basketball, or one of our unique sports like Tchoukball. For more information, please email me.

Benefits of being active:

Let’s take a moment to remember what being active can do for us:

Boosts energy and improves mood through ‘feel-good hormones’

Enhances self-esteem and confidence

Reduces stress and anxiety

Decreases loneliness, especially in group activities

Helps with focus, calmness, and motivation

Physical activity can also improve:

General mood

Self-confidence

Sleep quality

Energy levels

If you have a young person who’s struggling to get involved in sport, encourage them to try us out. Our sports and faith coaches are energetic and committed to helping young people develop their full potential.

If you’ve read this article and found no sporting opportunities in your area, please email us using the link below and let us know what you’d be interested in.

Contact Sportily

Finally, if you are a young female leader and would like to receive a leadership ‘feel good’ starter pack then please do email me your name, location and the name of your local coach and I will pass them to your Sportily Coach to hand out to you over the next few weeks.

Pause for thought…Who could you encourage to move more and get involved in Sportily activities/events or a club near you?"

Celebrating World Teachers' Day: A Conversation with Simon on the Role of Sportily in Schools

In celebration of World Teachers' Day, Sport and Faith Coach Luke sat down with Simon, a primary school teacher with a unique background in sports coaching, to talk about his journey in education and the impact of Sportily in his school. Simon shares his experience of transitioning from coaching to full-time teaching, how Sportily has enriched the school’s physical education and faith-based activities, and why he believes Sportily is a valuable resource for schools.

Read on to hear Simon's insights and why he encourages others to get involved.

Luke: Hi Simon, thank you so much for agreeing to have a chat with me about school life and the involvement Sportily has had in that over the years. Can you give us a bit of background into your history as a teacher and what you did before that?

Simon: Hi Luke, not a problem, it's great to be able to share the work Sportily has been doing here. This is only my third year as a primary school teacher; before that, I was a sports coach for a local company and actually led sessions at this school. I then completed my training and now teach a class here and oversee the PE curriculum.

Luke: How have you found the difference between being a sports coach versus a classroom teacher? I know the school is glad that your coaching experience can be used to enrich the PE lessons.

Simon: It was quite a shift to go from 2-3 sessions a week per school to full-time teaching with the same class. You have to manage the children very differently now that my role is all-encompassing, more than small snippets throughout the week. PE is still my favourite class to teach, it's very rewarding to see the children progress week after week.

Luke: What is your history with Sportily? When did you first hear about us? And what is your favourite thing about us?

Simon: I first came across Sportily when it was called PSALMS (before it was rebranded) as I used to do sessions alongside the team as a sports coach. When I joined the school as a teacher, I met Luke and am very glad that we can use his expertise and experience to offer our pupils something more. My favourite thing about Sportily is the variety that they can provide, Luke has led sessions in Blind Football, Boccia, Tchoukball, Handball and more! Trying to keep children on task and excited can be hard work, but knowing there is something new and exciting to look forward to, always keeps them going.

Luke: You work in a Church of England School, how have you seen Sportily supporting that?

Simon: Yes, Sportily has been so intentional with providing something new when it comes to exploring the mystery of faith with the school children. Sometimes it can be difficult to communicate faith to children but Sportily facilitates it in so many ways that opens the door to all children having an opportunity to learn and experience.

Luke: Can you give the readers an example of what Sportily can offer? Really try to sell it to them.

Simon: ActiveRE has been a big hit with KS2; being able to learn about the Christian faith through games and activities. The most memorable for me was a lesson about the Holy Spirit, which was shown by doing a blindfolded obstacle course with my partner having to direct me to the finish line. It wasn’t easy, but it was very well received by the children.

We've also had Sportily Christmas, Easter, and Sports Days, which introduce faith to children in new, sometimes unconventional ways. These are supported by the local Church team who the children can speak to and build a relationship with.

Luke: I am glad to remember the blindfolded obstacle course! It is also one of my favourites. Last question: What would you say to another school that is considering using Sportily as a provider?

Simon: Just go for it, and at least have a trial day. They have so much to offer that I'm sure will stick with the children as they continue through their school life. Teaching is about trying to communicate something in a fun way that's easy to understand, and Sportily does that so well. We are grateful as a school that you are available to us.

Luke: Thank you for your time Simon, I appreciate the kind words. See you for Multisport Madness After School Club next week!

If you're a school and want to find out more about what we offer, click here.

To see what activities we have avaialble in your area, click here.

From Self-Doubt to Strong: My journey with Abbie’s Pilates classes

Have you thought about giving Pilates a go?

This glowing testimonial from Gabbey highlights just how impactful Abbie’s Pilates classes have been on her confidence, motivation, and overall well-being. It’s a perfect example of how the right instructor and supportive environment can lead to lasting change, both physically and mentally.

"I love working with Abbie! In the past, I haven’t had the confidence to start classes, let alone continue to attend. I believe that the low price, the fact it was aimed at mums, and that it was run by a Christian charity is what drew me in. Abbie is definitely the reason I have continued to attend!

Having started Pilates with Abbie (my first ever class) I felt confident enough to try to start another, class with a different provider. Despite this being opposite my house, I only attended two sessions before quitting. Whilst the other instructor was lovely, I didn’t feel motivated in her classes. I also felt confident enough to try a yoga class for the first time, but didn’t return. This behaviour is usual for me. I very often start new things and quickly lose interest.

Despite this being my usual modus operandi, I have now been attending Pilates with Abbie for over a year and the results have been dramatic! Not only have I taken an interest in my health and body, but my confidence has grown. Knowing that I am mentally and physically strong enough to perform these moves gives me strength in my everyday life. Abbie often motivates me by telling me that we are strong women. When I start to tire, she reminds me that this is my body working and that means it is getting stronger.

Abbie’s teaching style suits me perfectly. When Abbie tells me to perform a move, I know that I have to perform it. I am not afraid to say no to people, yet I would never dream of saying no to Abbie. I know that if she asks me to do something, she knows that I can. I often don’t believe it myself until afterwards, but I trust in Abbie’s knowledge and always feel safe.

When we work, I feel like I have worked hard. Physically, I feel the burn. Yet mentally, I feel revitalised.

I am so grateful to be able to work with Abbie. She obviously lives and breathes sport and fitness. She is extraordinarily knowledgeable and passionate. Her passion really sets her apart. Abbie often tells me how wonderful our bodies are and how much we can achieve. I genuinely feel like I am achieving!"

If you’ve ever struggled to stay consistent or lacked confidence in starting a new fitness routine, Gabbey’s story is proof that Abbie’s classes might be exactly what you need to transform your own journey.

It's time for the Paralympics and we're feeling inspired

The Paralympics games in Paris sees a whole host of incredible athletes performing in their chosen disciplines, from well-known events athletics and swimming to the lesser seen boccia and goalball, there are events for all spectators.

One of the Cycling Athletes Kadeena Cox (MBE) will be going into the games as one of Team GB top medal prospects, in an interview with Charlotte Rush in Ash magazine she spoke about how the task of prepping for the Paralympics is an enormous task, but by breaking it down into smaller goals to achieve allows her to keep on track.

As a two time Gold medal winner in Rio and Tokyo there is a huge pressure that Kadenna will podium in Paris, with the added expectation that podium finish will be a gold. Speaking on handling that pressure Kadenna said:

‘I take strength from the team I have around me and my faith. I have a great support network. When things don’t go well, we evaluate and adapt. And of course, I know God has always got things in hand. Even if things don’t go the way I want them to right now, they will happen eventually, just as they’re meant to.’

Sage advice from the two time Paralympic velodrome champion, maybe this is the secret to her success being relaxed about the outcomes, surrounding herself with the right people and trusting God. Is there something that we all could learn from this?

Survival Guide for Your First Day of Secondary School

Surviving the first day of secondary school in Gloucestershire, like anywhere else, can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. To help you navigate this important milestone, we've put together the ultimate survival guide to make your first weeks at your new school a breeze.

Get organised beforehand
Ensure you have all the necessary school supplies, including notebooks, pens, pencils, and a backpack. Spare pens to offer to those who have forgotten is a great way to make new friends!

Uniform
Make sure your parents have a uniform list to follow so you can come prepared and looking smart.

Timetable and map
Try not to feel overwhelmed by the size of the school, use your map and allow enough time to get to lessons and before you know it, you'll have memorised all the corridors and hallways, including some short cuts!

Lunchtime
Lunchtime is where the real fun begins! Whether you're bringing in a packed lunch or buying from the canteen, this is a great time to catch up with your friends, play some games and meet other students.

Don't be afraid to ask questions
Don't hesitate to ask questions if something is unclear - teachers and staff are there to help. There's a chance you'll see a Sportily team member around your school. If you spot an orange Sportily jacket, make sure you come and say hello, as well as ask us any questions as we're likely to know the answers, too!

Join clubs and activities
Secondary school is not just about learning. There's so much fun to be had and your school will have lots on offer at lunchtime and afterschool. From sports to cooking, art to drama, there will be something for everyone and definitely something you'll enjoy.

Stay positive
It's normal to feel a bit anxious during this time so make sure you speak to your friends, family and us if you're feeling overwhelmed as we're all here to help you.

Bullying and peer pressure
Unfortunately, bullying and peer pressure may be something you come across during your time at school. Be aware of the signs of bullying and peer pressure and don't be afraid to report any issues to a teacher, school counsellor, parent, friend or other trusted person.

There you have it! This guide is your key to ensuring a smooth start to your journey through secondary school in Gloucestershire. Embrace the challenges, seize the opportunities, and remember, this adventure is just beginning. You've got this! 🌟

Shanice's journey with Sportily

Long-time volunteer Shanice-Louise has been a part of Sportily for as long as she can remember, and she’s eager to share her inspiring journey to encourage others to get involved.

"Hello, I'm Shanice-Louise, and I'd like to share my incredible journey with Sportily, which started back in 2010 when it was known as Psalms. My adventure began at Messy Church in Stonehouse, and from there, it extended to holiday clubs. These activities quickly became a cherished part of my childhood. Fourteen years have passed, and even if I could turn back time, I wouldn't change a thing about my experiences with Sportily.

In 2019, I took a significant step forward by joining the Leadership Academy. This programme was not only enjoyable but also played a crucial role in deepening my faith. The support I received from everyone at Sportily has been immense, and I am incredibly grateful. Despite my learning difficulties, Sportily has always been inclusive, making sure I felt welcomed and valued.

From 2017 to 2021, I participated in TRAC summer residential, an experience that boosted my confidence year after year. Now, I am proud to give back as a volunteer, helping out at youth clubs and the Leadership Academy.

Throughout my journey, there have been numerous instances where Sportily's inclusivity shone brightly. Even during challenging times, from my early years to now, I have never been turned away. This unwavering support has been a constant source of encouragement for me.

One of my favourite memories with Sportily is from my first TRAC residential event, where we visited Jumptastic. The excitement, laughter, and joy of that day remain vivid in my mind. It was a day filled with fun, and it symbolised the beginning of many wonderful experiences to come.

In conclusion, my journey with Sportily has been nothing short of amazing. The community, the support, and the opportunities have shaped me into who I am today. I am deeply grateful to Sportily for being such a significant part of my life.

Thank you, Sportily, for everything!"

We chat Paris Olympics 2024 highlights

That's a wrap on another exhilarating Olympic season, and Paris 2024 has truly outdone itself, providing a stunning backdrop for unforgettable performances, awe-inspiring athletic feats, and a celebration of global unity that will be remembered for years to come.

Did you enjoy the swimming at the Paris Olympics?

Did you cheer on Adam Peaty [GBR]? Were you amazed by the dominance of Leon Marchand [FRA]? Did you know that Summer Mcintosh [CAN], who won 3 gold and 1 silver medals is only 17 years old and this was her second Olympic games?

Do you know the story of Eric Moussambani Malonga who swam in the Syndey Olympics in 2000 for his country Equatorial Guinea?

The International Olympic Committee were looking to support the development of sport and athletes in the majority world who had been underrepresented at the games. To do this they arranged for a ‘wild card’ entry system whereby those athletes who did not meet the minimum qualification requirements could still take part.

Eric heard the call out on national radio for people who would be interested in representing their country by swimming in the Olympic games.

The only problem was, Eric couldn’t swim.

Still, he showed up at the trials, only to discover he was the only applicant!

Eric was going to the Olympics!

He had 8 months to learn to swim and to train, however there was no 50m pool in his country. So the only way he could practice was to use the 12m pool at a hotel, which he was allowed to do for 1 hour, 3 times a week.

Before arriving at the Olympics, he had never seen a 50m pool, yet here he was, needing to swim two whole lengths – the 100m Freestyle.

To make matters worse, he didn’t even have the right kit, so the South African Coach lent him some trunks to replace his boardshorts.

He lined up for his heat and his two competitors were disqualified for diving in before the gun had gone off. To win his heat, all Eric needed to do, was successfully swim two lengths of the pool.

Is there a more appropriate use of the phrase ‘out of your depth’?

Eric completed the swim in 1:52:72 (watch it here) – more than a minute slower than the world record and ‘Eric the Eel’ was born!

In Paris 2024, a new world record of 46:40 was set by Pan Zhanle [CHI].

Sadly, despite winning his heat Eric was not able to progress in the competition, but after the Syndey games, Eric actually continued swimming and he became a swimming icon in Equatorial Guinea

Four years later set a PB of 52:18, a time which would have won him the gold medal at the 1950 games.

In 2012 he became the National Swimming Coach and has championed swimming in Equatorial Guinea.

Have you ever felt out of your depth?

Have you ever felt like you’ve arrived at a big moment in your life and felt woefully underprepared for it?

Eric demonstrated determination and a total willingness to #Giveitago.

At Sportily we love to see people jumping in and giving it a go, that’s why #Giveitago is one of our mottos.

Why not have a look at our list of activities now and see how you might give something new a go in the coming weeks.

Why we've been obsessed with the Paris 2024 Olympics

This Olympic season there's been so much excitement, so many unexpected results, new sports and great stories of strength and determination, that Chris (our COO), like most of us, has found himself unable to look away from the TV.

"I don’t know about you, but I’ve been a bit obsessed with the Olympics.

Sports I've never watched before, have had me glued to the screen and the athlete's stories have been so inspiring.

I’ve loved discovering the mayhem of kayak cross and been amazed by the strength and agility of the gymnasts. The rowing, the track athletics, the velodrome, the sailing and windsurfing, the bmx, the tennis, the badminton and volleyball, they’ve all captured and captivated me.

I rewatched numerous times the moment Pidcock took gold in the final moments of the mountain bike race by sweeping past the French athlete and I cheered out loud, sat on the edge of my seat, watching Alex Yee take the Triathlon gold in the final few hundred meters.

Poolside, I’ve loved the way the crowd have cheered for the impressive Leon Marchand and been blown away by Summer Macintosh who won her 3rd gold medal and set an Olympic record time at her second Olympics, aged only 17!

The ancient Greeks, who started the Olympic games in Olympus had no tolerance for losers, the winner took all of the glory and there was no second or third place! In fact, losing could actually result in punishments being handed out (you can listen to a podcast about the ancient Olympics on BBC sounds here).

Thankfully, at Sportily, we are most excited when someone gives it a go and discovers the joy of moving more. Whilst it’s wonderful to be able to celebrate winning, whether it’s an Olympic gold medallist, or a personal achievement like a PB, there's a huge amount of joy we can all experience simply by getting physical in a way that’s right for you.

Why not check out BBC Radio 2’s ‘Move more’ campaign here, or discover a Sportily activity you can join in with here.

In Ancient Greek society, achieving a harmonious balance between body and mind was an important aspect of an individual's personal development. The gymnasiums where they trained therefore hosted wrestling matches as well as music rehearsals and provided weight lifting training as easily as philosophy lectures.

At Sportily we also recognise the importance of developing both physical and mental health, that’s why our ‘Play sports, talk life’ philosophy weaves its way into every activity we do. Yes, we have fun together playing sports and being active, but we also know its important to talk and create space for that.

Together as a team, as a community, we play together, talk about life, explore the Christian faith, make friends and have fun. Why not join us when the Olympic Closing ceremony is over."

Where is God in the Olympics?

Rich, our Head of Sport and Faith, shares his thoughts on this Olympic season.

"For me, the joy of the Olympics is being able to watch 10,500 athletes from 206 countries compete in 329 events across 32 different sports. This is then followed by the Paralympics, featuring 4,400 athletes from 206 countries compete in 549 events across 22 different sports.

It creates a huge sense of inspiration for all of us to get active. It encourages us to have fun, and to give all sorts of sports a try this summer and into the coming months.

I don’t think there is any better sporting competition in the world which inspires others to enjoy the breadth of sport and movement. The joy of moving, of teammates, of competition.

The Olympics and Paralympics are held in Paris this year. Exactly a century ago did Paris host the Olympics of 1924, where Eric Liddell won bronze in the 200-metre final, and gold in the 400-metre final. I cannot help but pause on his most famous quote:

‘I believe God made me for a purpose - but He also made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure'.

There was a joy in listening to Team GB swimmer Adam Peaty being interviewed after his silver medal performance on Sunday, day 2 of the Games. It was also inspiring to listen to swimmer Mark Foster, five-time Olympian and six-time World Champion, talk about Adam's journey. He spoke about witnessing changes in Adam over the last few years as he found his purpose, and that for Adam, it is more than just winning; it is about faith and his family.

As I listened to this, I was reminded of Eric Liddell. Eric described this sense of encountering God as he ran. This is a huge joy and a challenge for me, and as I think about Sportily and our desire to invite others to encounter God, I think about the ways that we have maybe forgotten, through our bodies and through movement.

We have an opportunity to help others find their purpose. Sport and movement can be the best place for this to take place."

The Olympics and Paralympics are here: Paris 2024

Sport and Faith Coach Christo welomes us into the Olympic season with some reflection.

"Friday the 26th of July is a big day in millions of people's diaries.

Why?

It marks the start of the Olympic and Paralympics Games Paris 2024.

Around 15,000 athletes will be part of the opening ceremony with hopes high of winning that gold for themselves and their country. After so many sacrifices, hours on hours of hard work and training, successes, and disappointments, those 15,000 Olympic athletes will compete in 329 events in 32 sports to see who the best of the best is. The Paralympics will see 4,000 athletes competing in 22 sports with 549 medals up for grabs.

When I think about the Olympics and participating in sports, I think about my own achievements. Well, I've never been on a level to qualify for the Olympics, but I did achieve a few amazing successes in running and bodybuilding. But what I realized over the years is that I'm not a champion because I achieved gold or silver medals but because I never gave up. And if I did give up, I found a way to lift my head and try again.

This is why I love sports and working with people to do sports and any physical activity. It's not about coming first, but about understanding that we are all winners and that we can achieve so much more in our lives than we realize. It is about small steps, about trying something new, about learning, about being part of something, yes, it's about finding that champion inside of you.

Enjoy the Olympics Paris 2024 and go out and try something new!"

Why is women’s participation in sport lower than men’s?

Female participation in sport is still significantly lower than male for a variety of reasons. Sport and Faith Leader Jo is our Female Participation Lead and is focused on getting girls involved in and enjoying sport.

Keep reading to find hear about her experiences growing up.

"As a child, I spent many precious hours training to be a gymnast. Two evenings of gymnastics and conditioning exercises followed by two evenings of ballet, not to mention Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons spent practicing routines and tumbles! Looking back, I felt fortunate to spend 10 years of my life, from the age of 5, actively engaged in sport; often competing in local and County competitions. I measured my own success by the number of trophies, gold, silver and bronze medals I had achieved. I also felt the disappointment of not winning, leading to a feeling of failure; where there seemed little comfort in family and friends saying that it was okay if I had done my best.

Over 30 years on, I still remember that my body image was a huge contributing factor to my mental health and wellbeing as I approached my teen years. Clingy, figure hugging leotards sometimes led me to agonise over my body shape and compare myself with other girls; leading me into a negative thought process that maybe ‘I was too curvy’ or ‘too athletic’ to be good enough. Coupled with the competitiveness of the amateur gymnastics world where being good at your sport can often lead to jealousy and bullying-therefore, despite my passion for gymnastics life could sometimes be tough and a little isolating!

Self-image and self-esteem seemed to be everything to me back then, therefore, I wondered how much things had really changed today. This led me to research the reasons why women’s participation in sport is lower than men as there are 313,600 fewer women than men who are regularly active according to Gender | Sport England’s statistics.

There have been many polls undertaken to identify why girls participation is lower. The Women’s Sport Foundation identified that young girls are ‘conditioned at an early age to shy away from sport due to the fact that they can be perceived as being unfeminine, or are afraid of failure or being teased’. This aligns with my lived experience during my youth.

I suppose the questions to consider next are… what does this look like in the community where I work? Are young girls accessing after school sports clubs and if not why not? Early indications with my local secondary school seem to indicate that female participation is low and it is difficult to attract young females to engage in after school sports.

Therefore, what can I do to have a positive impact on fostering a love of sport in those young girls who may already feel that sport is not for them?

Find out more in my continuing Blogs through the course of 2024, as I journey to try and increase girls participation in sport across the Sportily community."

How Sportily came to be

Revd Tim Hastie-Smith, Diocesan Missioner for New Worshipping Communities chats about what led to the initiative that came to be Sportily.

"Nearly four years ago, the Bishop of Gloucester's Council made the decision to fund a diocesan-wide children and youth focused sports ministry that makes God’s love known through sport and activity and seeks to establish new forms of church in 2020, a particularly brave, thoughtful and humble one.

It grew, not from the pressure of a particularly loud special interest group, but from the work and consultive reflections of the Diocesan LIFE (Leadership, Imagination, Faith, Engagement) vision, and the detailed consideration of Bishop’s Council.

Perhaps one of the most significant lessons, so far, from Sportily, is that the places where the ministry is flourishing are the places where there is the closest relationship with the local parish church and where the prevailing mood is one of openness and trust and where there is no sense of being threatened. Also striking is the openness of schools, and local councils, and health and welfare professionals to the work of Sportily. Gratitude that the Church is stepping into a space where there is enormous need."

We've since received this email encouragement:

“A quick email to say, 'Here! Here!' to Tim’s message in this week's bulletin. I hope people read it.

Sportily has been a blessing to my benefice both because of the personnel that work in this locality and the openness towards doing things differently, creatively and with all 'people of peace'. Adam and team have been able to engage in mission and relationship building in ways that my Sunday church-goers haven't been able to and in places we've struggled to reach. So, thank you to all who developed the vision, had the courage to create it and the commitment to back it financially.

Sportily's work is definitely kingdom work!”

Why you should come along to our EPIC 5-day summer residential

Sport and Faith Leader Tim is the go-to guy for our summer residential and wanted to share what all the fuss is about...

"Well, summer 2024 is finally here and as the smell of freshly cut grass and the lure of BBQ’s and ice cream fills us with a sense of happiness and joy, there's also something else round the corner which brings a sense of excitement and anticipation (not Euro 2024, but FYI #thisyearitsfinallycominghome!!) it is of course our Sportily summer 5-day residential at the TRAC centre just outside Newent.

Our TRAC residential has been a longstanding flagship event of the summer holidays and is a time which over the years have provided young people from across the Sportily network with the chance to gather, connect, eat, and explore the Christian faith together. This year will be no exception as we have a potential 70 young people signed up to share 5 days of raft building, climbing, archery, zip-wire, art, drama, BBQ, sport, amazing guest speakers, interactive workshops and much much more.

The TRAC residential is more than just your average summer camp, the beautiful setting and sense of Christian hospitality allows TRAC to offer a safe space for young people to play sports, talk life, explore the Christian faith and make memories that will potentially be with them for life. Over the last decade of running our residential, we've seen young people try new activities, make new friends, smash through doors they didn't even realise they could open, and for some, explore the Christian faith and experience Jesus for the first time in their lives.

Our theme this year is "Ignite the Light," and we'll be unpacking and exploring how different areas of life offer the young people the chance to find light, bringing them peace, positive well-being, mental health, and joy, as well as exploring how the Christian faith is a light which can shine brighter than any other light and a light which the darkness can never put out.

We always have a good mixture of Christian and non-Christian young people attend the residential and this year is no different. I always come away amazed by how God moves and works during the week in the mountain top moments and the smallest of whispers.

Whether it's the live house band that gets you jumping or the quiet conversations with new friends that energises you, this residential is an adventure that's waiting for you to join. Why not have a chat to someone you know who has been to our TRAC residential before and get a flavour of what may be in store for you and the memories and journey behind the door, waiting for you to open it and jump in."

TRAC 2024 Ignite the light and watch it shine.

When will Netball become a professional sport?

Victoria, one of our Sport and Faith Apprentices, is a huge fan of both playing and watching netball. Her dedication to the sport mirrors the passion and commitment seen in many women's sports, where record-breaking, inspirational athletes often balance full-time jobs alongside their athletic pursuits.

This raises a critical question: when will these talented women get the recognition and support they deserve, allowing netball to flourish as a professional sport? Keep reading to here what she thinks:

"Friday and Saturday nights mean fast-paced, nail-biting matches in the UK’s Netball Super League between 10 dynamic and talented teams. I love settling down with a cup of tea after a long day at work to enjoy these athletes showcasing their skills on the court. Despite their impressive performances, many of these players have come straight from long days of balancing training and their careers.

While some fortunate players receive sponsorships or are part of the England Roses Pathway, most juggle full-time jobs or studying with their extensive training, conditioning, and match commitments. Despite England's success in reaching the final of the 2023 Netball World Cup, netball is still only considered a professional sport in Australia and New Zealand. This is why players like Fran Williams and Helen Housby have moved overseas to focus on netball full-time.

This situation raises an important question: why isn’t netball in England taking its rightful place as a fully supported and funded professional sport? England Netball is actively working towards this goal with programs such as Walking Netball, NetballHer, and See Us Now, which support various communities and promote netball across the country. These initiatives include NSL players discussing their paths to semi-professional netball, their hopes for the future, body image, mental health, and the challenges they face balancing their jobs with the increasing publicity of being in the NSL.

This year, the BBC and SkySports began broadcasting two out of five matches each week, following the success of the World Cup. This is a brilliant step forward for promoting netball in the UK. However, compared to the number of League 2 football matches shown, there is still much work to be done. Netball might not yet have the same number of fans or the long history of sports like football and rugby, but the players demonstrate the same determination and grit in their training, travel, gameplay, and discipline. The key difference lies in the lack of secure facilities, funding, and time.

Netball being recognized as a professional sport would benefit not only the current professionals but also those growing up with the sport. It would offer young players a viable career option and not just a hobby for Friday nights. This recognition is also crucial for aspiring coaches and umpires.

As a player, umpire, and recent coach, I have seen firsthand how netball brings people together, supports teammates through tough times, and boosts confidence. Netball is not just a sport you played in secondary school and vaguely remember; it's a physical, tactical, and strong game that challenges you to grow, supported by a vibrant community of players, coaches, umpires, and sideline supporters. It truly deserves to be recognized as a professional sport."

Adam's Mental Health Journey

For World Mental Health Week 2024, we caught up with Sportily Apprentice Adam to hear about his journey with his mental health. His diagnosis of Erb's Palsy has brought on its own unique challenges while growing up, but he hopes that by sharing his story, others will know that they are not alone.

"Growing up, I'd describe my childhood as pretty typical: two loving parents and an older sister. Despite my disability, my parents always encouraged me to get stuck in with other kids my age, treating me no differently. They recognized my challenges and were always there to lend a hand or show me a new approach.

It wasn't until primary school that I began to grasp my differences. Hearing comments like, "You need two hands for this," had a significant impact on me as I navigated learning. It made me try twice as hard to do things as I always felt two steps behind everyone, which has been the theme of most of my life. I hold myself to standards that are way too high to maintain and beat myself up if I don’t perform at a level I think I should be at.

It took me 20 years to see my disability as a blessing rather than something to hold me back, but I still struggle with anxiety and the feeling of people staring and talking about it. I would say that my mental health has struggled because of being “different” to most people. But I think it has made me stronger and because of it, I strive to participate in activities like everyone else, even if my approach may differ or require more time. Despite my fear of asking for help, fearing failure or being perceived as incapable due to my impairment, I refuse to give up.

I will forever be grateful for my amazing family and support worker who treat me just like everyone else, never allowing me to feel inadequate or different. I've achieved more than I ever thought possible and take pride in my accomplishments. Though I still face challenges, I'm excited for this next chapter of my life."

Mark's Mental Health Journey

For World Mental Health Day 2023, we sat down with Mark who was a Sport and Faith Coach for us at the time.

He shared a moving story of his struggles with mental health which you can read here.

For Mental Health Awareness Week 2024, we asked him to reflect on how it felt to share his story with some of the young people we work with and the impact it had on the people around him.

If you are struggling with anything similar or any aspect of your own mental health, please do find a trusted friend or adult to speak to. At the bottom of this article, we have listed a selection of mental health charities and how you can contact them.

"At TRAC 2023 (our summer residential), I did a mental health seminar for the first time in my life. I’d shared my journey prior to this with friends and those who I felt needed to hear it. I’d even preached on it in some of my sermons, but didn’t go into great depth.

What have I learned from doing this?

The biggest lesson I’ve learnt is that I’m truly not alone. There’s a saying – 'vulnerability breeds vulnerability'. What I’ve found is by me not hiding away from my struggles but sharing them with others, it gives them permission to do the same. I’ve found so many people are struggling in secret or downplay their emotions.

We’re all on the mental health spectrum somewhere and where we are will alter throughout our lives. When I was younger, guys in particular didn’t share their emotions – it wasn’t seen as ‘masculine’ or ‘cool.’ I’m glad that this isn't the case as much today, with there being more awareness of mental health struggles. But the challenge for me is to not remain silent. Especially having been a voice of hope, encouragement, living testimony and source of light to others, I have to remember to check in with myself regularly.

Whenever I talk about mental health with young people, I normally do an anonymous Q&A session. The questions that get submitted are heartbreaking and show me the severity of the battles we’re facing. I’ve resolved in my life not to stay silent over my battles but to talk openly about them to others when appropriate. To be vulnerable, to show the scars on my heart – to say I still have days I don’t want to get out of bed and feel like the world is crumbling around me.

We need to speak out and let others know it’s okay.

The overwhelming feedback I’ve received from doing this – is people being extremely grateful and opening up back to me saying I’ve never talked like this to anyone before. I remember back in 2020 I read a bloggers post on their mental health journey. They battled with the exact same things I did, but by them being so vulnerable, open and even approachable as I corresponded in emails with them – they gave me something I could never repay them for – Hope. I had hope if they got better so can I.

So let me encourage you – it can be vulnerable and scary – but you may be the key to someone else’s breakthrough and be the hope they need."

If you'd like to share your story, please email madiy.warner@sportily.org.uk.

Egg-straordinary Easter: Unwrapping faith, friendship, and fun!

Sport and Faith Leader, Jo takes us through the meaning of Easter and how it's inspiring us at our holiday clubs this year.

"As I unwrap another cream egg, I’m reminded of the reason for the season. The fundamental truth behind our faith and one that breaks the mould! There is no greater story in the history of humanity than that of Holy Week. A story of good news and hope that is truly miraculous; yet strewn with betrayal, deceit and brutality.

As we wind through the 8-day Easter story during our 2-day holiday club, our young people will encounter the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Through sport, craft, drama and actively solving clues they will find out about how these historic events unfolded. They will also have the opportunity to build new friendships, enjoy good company, eat hot food and talk life!

Despite it being around 2000 years after Jesus died on the cross, His death and resurrection is just as relevant today; in 1 Corinthians 15:14, Paul states “And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.” Therefore, It’s completely useless to believe in a god who isn’t powerful enough to raise himself from the dead. That’s what sets Jesus apart from false gods and prophets.

As I ponder the Easter story, I wonder what life might have been like back in Jesus’ time without technology, petrol-powered or electric transport and mobile phones to spread the news. Yet, today people all over the world know about His death and celebrate Good Friday as a symbol of Hope and of an eternal future.

I also wonder what it would have been like to have been one of the many witnesses to have seen Jesus walking around after his death. How would you have reacted? Would you have been like Thomas (aka Doubting Thomas) who wanted to put his fingers in Jesus’ wounds or would you have thrown yourself down and worshipped him in reverence and fear as the true King and Son of God?

On a personal note, It’s a real privilege for me to follow Jesus and to be able to share the good news with the young people and the wider community who engage with Sportily.

This Easter, as you spend time with friends and family why not make room for Jesus? Why not spend some time with him in prayer, dig out your Bible (there are some excellent stories) and why not let him speak to you whilst you get to know his life story better!

Finally, just as the spring signifies new life; I’m reminded that the chocolate egg signifies the empty tomb. As Christians, we believe that Jesus has risen and that we can choose to have a real relationship with Him as we believe that he is alive!

Wishing you all a blessed Easter 2024!"

What your World Book Day Character says about you

For World Book Day this year, Sport and Faith Coach John wanted to find out how young people link reading and sports together.

"Who is your World Book Day Character?

Over the last couple of weeks, many households have gone through the annual hunt for the perfect costume to wear for seemingly the most popular dress-up day of the year.

Would the choice help reveal something about the sportiness of the wearer? Would books about sports lead to an increase in interest in reading or indeed be inspirational in promoting sports? And finally, what do children think it says about sport in the Bible?

With the help of children throughout the Primary QuEST schools, I endeavoured to find out.

What we did:

Fifty children throughout the trust took part in a survey, where they were asked about World Book Day characters, and then asked to give their opinion on some of my old football novels that I read at their age, and other sports books I was able to find in their school libraries. They compared if they would have an impact on their motivation for reading or playing sport, and we finished by asking how sport was mentioned in the Bible.

Starting points:

Of the fifty children, 21 were girls and 29 boys. They were from both Key Stage 1 & 2 with an average age of just under 9 years old. 92% identified as sporty compared with 68% who would describe themselves as big readers. This was interesting for the fact that these children found it far easier to identify something about themselves that was sporty, with their feelings about their ability to read coming across as far more entrenched (this wasn’t just to impress their PE teacher!).

Character Studies:

There were a range of categories that recurred in their costume choice. 22% of both boys and girls chose to dress as footballers based on real-life players. Lots of the comments pointed to role models being copied: “Obviously good at sport” and one even ran down Cristiano Ronaldo’s career as “Skills at Man Utd now goals, goals, goals!”

The next most popular were Harry Potter and Princess characters. Indeed almost all were identified as sporty apart from the Wimpy Kid or Vampire (the problem with the vampire was he was likely to be sent off for biting!). The princesses provided intriguing observations: “She wouldn’t be good at sport, because she couldn’t get her dress muddy,” and Cinderella who would likely lose her shoe.

Reading or Sport

For the impact of reading sports books, a definite pattern revealed itself. There were those with football enthusiasm, who were clearly excited by the sports books. “This will help me get better at football,” and “If you get me one about Ronaldo I would read it 100 times!”

Others separated reading and sports as activities. One particularly sporty boy observed “It's just not what I want to read about,” with others commenting that it would have little impact on their reading unless they were about more than just football.

Sport & the Bible

64% didn’t think that sport was mentioned in the Bible. One voiced this rather strongly: “Sport has nothing to do with God.”

Those who did think it was mentioned showed good lateral thinking from the stories they had heard in various assemblies. They mentioned stories such as Jesus walking in the desert or into Jerusalem as examples of physical activity. There would have been swimming when Jesus walked on water and “Baptism must have some swimming,” as well.

School has clearly had an impact on their thinking as many thought it might include that sport was good for you. Children at the top of the age range also made links between teaching from the Bible and expected behaviour: it teaches you “Sportsmanship, and not be unhumble or to boast.”

One football enthusiast thought the Bible might tell you about great footballers from the past like Zidane or Pele. If only there was a great role model hidden within its pages, who could inspire great feats for the next set of readers!"

Flipping fantastic, the batter way to celebrate Pancake Day!

We chatted with Sport and Faith Leader for Forest of Dean, Adam about his thoughts on Pancake Day.

Flour. Eggs. Milk.

Whisk it.

Fry it.

Top it.

Eat it.

That’s the lifecycle of a pancake! A traditional feast from three humble ingredients consumed with sweet or savoury toppings before many give up something for forty days in the lead up to Easter celebrations.

My dog, Champ, holds the (unverified) Guinness World Record for eating a pancake - one pancake day we were making pancakes and my daughter, being just over two years old, wanted to try and flip a pancake, so as I crouched down behind her to assist with a flip, and as we tossed the pancake in the air, up bounced our all-ears English springer, who lept with his mouth wide open to gobble up the pancake which was in midair, in one single glup! From the pan to the tummy in 0.26secs!

Pancake Day, also known by its other name, Shrove Tuesday, is the event that starts getting us ready for Easter. In some Christian traditions, people will give up something as they prepare themselves for Easter, whereas other Christian traditions might begin a new habit; both have the same focus: the aim to bring the person closer to God.

In the lead-up to this Pancake Day, I wonder if you are planning or thinking of giving up something or starting something. A bit like my dog, Champ, he was ready to jump and grab that pancake - have you taken some time to plan what you will do? Here are three simple thoughts to help you get started:

Start Small; take small, incremental steps to the bigger goal.

Be accountable; tell a friend or family member to help you stick to it.

Have Fun; don’t stress the small stuff; if you mess up, laugh and carry on!

And most importantly, plan your pancake toppings wisely! Whether it's classic lemon and sugar, delicious Nutella and banana, or something savoury, Pancake Day is a time to get together with loved ones to enjoy good food and share laughter and joy.

Sportily takes on Couch to 5km

Sport and Faith Coach Luke Campbell heads up our Couch to 5km sessions in Thameshead which can be found here. We checked in with him to find out more about why he enjoys it.

There is a beauty with running that, I think, is unlike any sport. It's raw and natural, but individual to the athlete and can be interpreted as one sees fit. There are many people I know who can run 20 miles at the drop of a hat, others who would only think of covering that distance in a car. Like anything in life, everyone starts as a beginner, and no one gets good by accident.

The original Couch To 5km (C25km) was set up in 1996 but people have been learning to run long before then. It follows a training plan that works on the basis of progressive overload; incrementally increasing the demand/force over a period of time which your body adapts to. The same idea works with lifting weights or holding your breath. As you begin to run, your body will be put under new stresses and over time it will adapt by getting stronger and can tolerate more stress. This is how marathon runners build up to consistently running 100 miles a week, it takes months!

The great thing about C25km is that everyone is in the same boat (or starts on the same couch). It's surrounded by community that's built by overcoming challenges together and having an understanding of what the person next to you is going through. If you do C25km in a group, you'll start off as strangers but finish week 10 as friends.

While starting the group in January and running in the dark with very low temperatures may sound like a bad idea, the feeling of sitting down in the warm pub with a hot chocolate in your hand makes it all worth it. At Sportily we #playsportstalklife; and we put the same amount of effort into both of these. We see having a conversation about your day as just as important as going for a run.

So, here’s the sign you were looking for; to go out and find a local running group or grab some friends and embark on this challenge together. When you look back on this in 5 years’ time, you won’t remember how far or how fast you could run, but you will remember how running as part of a community made you feel.

#giveitago, and if you don’t like it, there are another 100 sports and activities for you to try.
