More than chocolate: Why Easter feels like a reset

What if Easter was more than just chocolate eggs and long weekends? What if it was a chance to reset – physically, mentally and spiritually?

In this blog, Abi shares her reflections on why Easter is such a powerful season for renewal, and how it can shape both our faith and our wellbeing.

"Easter isn’t just about chocolate eggs, family meals and time off. It can also be the perfect opportunity for a personal reset. Spring brings longer days, warmer air and a natural sense of new beginnings, making it an ideal moment to refresh your fitness goals and reconnect with movement.

For Christians, Easter is a powerful reminder of renewal, hope and new life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. That message connects beautifully with caring for both our bodies and our spirit. The Bible encourages believers to honour their bodies and to live with discipline, gratitude and purpose. This season invites us not only to celebrate with family and community, but also to embrace movement, wellness and balance as part of how we live out our faith.

Rather than focusing on guilt or overindulgence, Easter can inspire a fresh commitment to health by choosing joy, being thankful for our physical strength and renewing habits that support a healthy, vibrant life. Just as Easter symbolises new beginnings, it offers a meaningful moment to refresh both faith and fitness, moving forward with intention, energy and hope.

Easter celebrations bring families and communities together in joy, generosity and togetherness. They remind us of the importance of compassion, unity and serving others. In that spirit, the season gives us the chance to practise kindness, extend forgiveness and recommit not only to our own wellbeing but also to supporting those around us.

The story of Easter reminds us that renewal is both spiritual and practical. It’s seen in restored hope, strengthened faith and daily choices that reflect love and discipline. As Christians celebrate this sacred time, we’re encouraged to carry its message beyond a single day, living with gratitude, balance and purpose.

Whether through prayer, reflection, acts of service or a renewed focus on healthy habits, Easter becomes more than a date in the calendar. It becomes a reminder that growth is always possible and that every new season brings an opportunity to begin again with faith, strength and hope.

How do you celebrate Easter?

For me, I love watching the sunrise on Easter morning because it symbolises hope, new life and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Then I spend the day with my family, going to an Easter service and enjoying a classic Easter egg hunt together."

We've got so much happening this Easter, from pop-up sports to holiday clubs, and fitness sessions for adults. Click here to find out what's on near you.

Kicking off the new term with faith, fun, and community

From holiday club highlights to the excitement of a new term, Coach Ydson shares how sport and faith bring joy, growth, and community.

"The start of a new school year feels like stepping onto the pitch before kick-off: full of energy, anticipation, and possibility. Summer gave us space to rest and recharge, but also to celebrate some fantastic moments together.

From the buzz of our Sportily Holiday Clubs, to seeing young people try new activities for the very first time, to simply sharing food, laughter, and stories, we were reminded again how powerful sport can be for building community, sparking joy and talking about life.

One of my favourite highlights was seeing the smiles on the children's faces and hearing them sing their hearts out on the karaoke machine! Those moments remind us why we do what we do.

Now it’s time to lace up again. Each new term is like a fresh match: challenges to face, skills to sharpen, and victories to celebrate along the way. These opportunities feel like the next step in helping young people not only grow in confidence and skill, but also in faith and community. And just like in sport, it’s not only about the score at the end, but how we play the game; with perseverance, joy, and team spirit.

Here’s to the season ahead. Let’s run into it with courage, excitement, and open hands for all the opportunities to come!"

Kicking off a career: Daniel’s Apprenticeship story (so far)

Meet Daniel, one of our Sportily apprentices who joined us in September last year. Discover how he’s thrown himself into every session, built his confidence, and grown his skills along the way.

"Starting my apprenticeship with Sportily has been an exciting step for me. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I knew I wanted to get stuck into something active, people-focused, and hands-on, and this has definitely ticked all those boxes.

I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship so far. Every week looks a little bit different, which is one of the things I love most about it. The practical side keeps me on my toes with loads of variety; I can go from delivering PE lessons in schools to leading after-school clubs, youth sessions, holiday clubs and supporting events, all in the same month. Working alongside different members of the Sportily team has helped me learn how to create fun, active sessions, and I’ve enjoyed meeting such a wide range of people along the way.

The study element of the apprenticeship is great too, especially because it can all be done from home, rather than having to travel to a university campus. At first I found it a bit daunting being the one leading some of the sessions, but over time, my confidence has really grown, thanks to the support of my tutor and colleagues. I’ve learnt so many new skills — particularly around leadership and knowing how to coordinate a team to successfully run a session.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to keep building on what I’ve learnt, try even more new things, and see where this apprenticeship leads in the future.

If you’re someone who enjoys being active, working with people, and learning on the job, I’d definitely recommend giving this kind of opportunity a go, you never know where it might take you! My three bits of advice are: put 100% into what you do, don’t be afraid of asking questions, and enjoy it."

Taking the first step: Building community through running and faith

In this blog, Lucy, Sport and Faith Coach in the Forest of Dean, reflects on how the journey from 0-5k became more than just running—creating space for connection, courage, and personal growth through faith and community.

"In February 2024, I joined the Sportily team, and my first session was a 0-5k group taking place throughout Lent. Rather than giving something up, this was a chance to take up something positive and impactful during Lent. After 9 weeks of meeting as a group, it culminated in running 5k at the Lydney Park Run.

We’ve run (no pun intended!) two 0-5k groups in Newnham, and it’s been wonderful to get to know a variety of people and see them begin their running journey; all because of taking that first step and signing up to come and join the 0-5k. Starting something new can be scary, and joining a group where you don’t know anyone can feel like a challenge. However, the groups are very inclusive and supportive, and it’s a great way to get to know others. Why not join a Sportily 0-5k group that’s happening in your area? Drop us a message if you'd like us to arrange a 0-5k running group in your area!

From our last 0-5k session, the group decided that they’d like to try netball. Some of the group hadn’t played since they were in school, but it was all about ‘giving it a go’. From that, Newnham Netballers was formed! After taking a break for the winter, we’re restarting at the end of August, and anyone over the age of 16 is very welcome to join us! Keep an eye out here for all the details.

In Secondary School, I always loved cross-country running, and whilst most of my friends hated the bleep test, I loved it! For me, it wasn’t so much the competition against others (we had two very speedy county runners in our year group that I was never going to beat!), but it was the competition against myself. Could I better my time? When it felt like I had nothing left to push on with, could I keep going instead of giving up?

Running is a wonderful metaphor for life! In the Bible, Paul uses the analogy of a runner in a race; he looks at the determination and discipline needed to win a physical race, as well as the perseverance needed in our spiritual lives. He reminds us not to get off track, not to look back, and to persevere! Sometimes in life, it can feel like you’re running a marathon – backwards and through treacle, but there is always hope and a reason to press on!

As a Christian, I find that getting out for a run on my own has always been a chance to pause from the busyness of life, to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation and to spend time praying. When running with a friend, or with a group, it’s a chance to listen, chat and ‘talk life’, and be part of a wonderful, encouraging community with amazing wellbeing and mental health benefits.

For me, running is a wonderful culmination of friendship, fitness, fun and faith. Why not come and #give it a go? As is often said, ‘The hardest step is the one out of the door.’"

Mental Health Awareness Week: Finding Hope in the Struggle

In his latest post for Mental Health Awareness Week, Sport and Faith Coach Mark shares an inspiring update on his journey with mental health, exploring how God is using his story to bring hope and healing to others — and how we can each offer the gift of presence to those around us.

#MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

"Hi! My name is Mark, and I’ve battled with OCD, BDD and ADHD for most of my life. In my previous posts — Let's Chat: World Mental Health Day and Mark’s Mental Health Journey — I shared more about my story, so I won’t repeat it here. But I do want to give you a little update. 😊

A lot has changed since I wrote my last post, and I’m excited to share it with you!

I've always had a huge heart for those struggling with their mental health, especially after my own experiences with illness and hospital admissions. At the beginning of 2023, I felt God whisper to me that He wastes nothing in our lives. Every difficulty, every hard time, and every struggle has a purpose — shaping us into who we’re meant to be, showing us what’s truly important, and enabling us to help others.

That whisper led me to embark on a new, exciting (and daunting!) journey of becoming a therapist. I completed a Level 3 course in Counselling Skills and then applied for a Master’s programme in Counselling and Psychotherapy at UWE University. I’m now just coming to the end of my first year — and believe it or not, I’ve loved every moment of it, even the assignments!

It’s such a privilege to see how my own pain, scars and hardships are being redeemed by God for His Kingdom and glory. My struggles have birthed in me a deeper empathy and compassion for others — qualities that were there before but have now grown to a whole new level. I’m learning to sit with others, listen to them, support them, and use the skills God has given me to help them through their own challenging times.

But here’s the thing — you can do this too!

Carl Rogers, the American psychologist who founded person-centred therapy, once said:

“The most profound gift we can give others is our presence.”

You don’t have to go on a counselling course to offer this gift. The more we work on ourselves, accept ourselves, and find peace within ourselves, the more we can be a presence of hope for others. When people see someone who has done the hard work of healing and growth, it gives them hope that change is possible for them too.

Let me encourage you — you can do this! When we show up fully present for another person, attuned to their needs and giving them our undivided attention, it not only helps them but transforms us as well.

So, who in your world today needs you to be fully present for them?

How might God want to use your experiences to walk alongside another?

Remember this: God wastes nothing.
("Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." — John 6:12)

Praying for fullness of life for you on your journey,
Mark"

How Pilates helped heal my body after an Eating Disorder

Mental health doesn’t have one face or one path – we each walk our own unique journey. Abbie, our Pilates Specialist Sports Coach shares her story in the hope that it brings comfort, courage, and a reminder that healing is always possible.

#MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

"My Journey with Mental Health – What Kept Me Going

Looking back on my early teenage years, school was tough for me. I struggled with dyslexia, and it often made me feel like I wasn’t good enough. The one thing that gave me confidence and made me feel valued was swimming. I threw myself into it, literally. The more I swam, the more I felt like I had a purpose.

But as school became more challenging, my self-worth started to fade. I didn’t feel seen. Swimming remained my outlet, but gradually it became tied to how I looked and what I ate. I began focusing more on my diet in ways that weren’t healthy, and eventually, my body went into survival mode. I became so unwell that I was hospitalised and put on bed rest. The doctors diagnosed me with anorexia, but I was so malnourished I couldn’t fully understand it.

Support Through the Struggle

The years that followed were incredibly difficult, but I was lucky to have the support of an amazing eating disorder clinic. They didn’t just help me – they helped my family too. Watching someone you love go through something like this is heartbreaking, and that support was a lifeline for all of us.

A turning point came when my body simply couldn’t cope any longer. I was exhausted, emotionally and physically, and I reached a place where I felt like I couldn’t keep going. I’d become consumed by the idea of being smaller than everyone else.

One Sunday evening, I went to church with my family – my Dad’s a minister, so it was a regular part of our lives. I was completely drained, and during the service, something inside me broke open. I turned to my mum and said, “I can’t do this anymore. I need help.” People gathered around to pray for me. I desperately needed a miracle and that night, something shifted. I found myself saying the words, “I need to eat now.”

It surprised everyone, including me. That night, I had my first full meal in a long time – yes, even cake. I still remember the exact slice. What used to bring me fear became a symbol of hope. That moment marked the beginning of real healing.

Finding Strength in Pilates

After I started eating again, I was still very weak, but I wanted to move my body in a new, healthier way. I needed to find something that would nourish me physically and emotionally. That’s when I discovered Pilates.

I learned that it was originally used to help soldiers recover from the trauma of war. That spoke to me – I felt like I’d been in a battle too. The Pilates reformer was even inspired by hospital beds and springs for those who couldn’t get up. I had been that patient once, and it made sense to start here.

I began slowly, with worship music playing in the background. I would pray during my practice. It was gentle, restorative, and it gave me space to rebuild – body, mind, and spirit. I fell in love with Pilates. It helped me reconnect with myself and with God. It gave me back my strength and a renewed sense of who I am.

Eventually, I trained as a Pilates instructor, so I could help others experience the same transformation. Through this journey, I’ve found a way of moving that supports my mental health as much as my physical health. I’ve not just regained life – I’ve discovered a life of joy and purpose, aligned with how I believe God created me to be.

A Message of Hope

If you’re going through something similar – whether it’s a struggle with mental health, physical health, or both, I want you to know there is a way forward. Your challenges don’t define who you are. They are part of your story, not the whole story.

I spent eight years in an eating disorder clinic. Healing didn’t happen overnight. It was slow, messy, and full of ups and downs. Even now, I sometimes still battle with the same thoughts. But the difference is, I know I don’t have to act on them. I can bring them to God in prayer and trust Him to carry me through each day.

Recovery is not always a straight line. But no matter how long it’s been or how deep the struggle feels, it’s never too late for God to work in your life. He’s not finished with you yet. He can turn even the darkest times into something beautiful.

Today, five years on, I still practice Pilates six days a week. It’s my daily reset, my space to continue healing and growing. I feel the strongest and most grounded I’ve ever been.

Thank you for reading my story. I hope it encourages you wherever you are on your journey."

What Serena, setbacks, and scripture teach us this Easter

Easter is a beautiful reminder that even in our hardest moments, hope is never lost—because God is always at work, even when we can’t yet see it. Christo, one of our sport and faith coaches, shares a few thoughts this Easter on handling setbacks—both on the field and in life.

"Tennis legend Serena Williams has faced numerous injuries and health issues throughout her career, including a life-threatening pulmonary embolism in 2011. Despite these setbacks, Williams has displayed remarkable resilience and determination, going on to win multiple Grand Slam titles after her recovery.

Now the question for this Easter: How do I deal with setbacks?

As Christians, we may wrestle with questions about trusting our Saviour—especially when life doesn't make sense, and when bad things happen to good people. Right?

When I read the Easter story of Jesus going to the cross to die for our sins, this verse came to mind:

“From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ (which means ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’)”
— Matthew 27:45–46

This passage is arguably one of the saddest and most perplexing scriptures in the Bible. Martin Luther once asked: How can God forsake God?… Or did He?
Jesus trusted the Father completely—even unto death—yet still uttered those heart-wrenching words.

Here’s the thing: we can’t fully understand everything from God’s perspective. Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 13:12,

“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”

If you read the word NOWHERE, what do you see?
You can interpret it in two ways:

NOWHERE, suggesting that God is absent, uncaring, or silent.

NOW-HERE, affirming that God is present, attentive, and right by your side.

It’s all a matter of perspective.

Take courage this Easter, knowing this truth from Isaiah 55:8–9:

“‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.’”

There are many things we simply don’t understand. But this Easter, as you reflect on the cross and what Jesus did for us, I encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit to help you see NOW-HERE—to open your heart to a deeper, divine perspective.

Remember these unchanging truths:

God is good. Always. “No one is good—except God alone.” — Mark 10:18

God is for you. Forever. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” — Romans 8:31

God is with you. Always. “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” — Hebrews 13:5

Have a wonderful Easter. May the finished work of Jesus fill you once again with hope, awe, and gratitude—giving you a renewed perspective: a God perspective."

Breaking barriers: Women in sport and the power of self-belief

As Sport and Faith Leader Jo has explored in previous posts about the barriers to women’s participation in sport and the importance of fostering self-esteem, this blog continues the conversation by highlighting how sport can play a key role in breaking negative cycles and building confidence for women of all ages.

"What an inspiration Manette Baillie is! Last month, at the ripe old age of 102, she jumped out of an aeroplane in Sussex! What an inspiring woman — who’s your inspiration?

As I’m currently training to become a Pilates instructor in a world where age matters, it’s no mean feat. As a mature member of the Sportily team, my motivation to improve my own fitness aligns with my determination to see others get fitter, improve their posture, breathe better, and live life to the full, just like Manette. However, I sometimes catch myself thinking… ‘I’m not good enough’, ‘I’m not thin enough’, or ‘I’m too old’. It’s then that I realise I’m trapped in a negative self-esteem loop and need to break free!

It seems to be becoming increasingly difficult for women to have high self-esteem and to love themselves for who they are in a world full of expectations, ‘thinspiration’, and unprecedented pressure on women to be perfect — especially through social media. Although there have been many advertising campaigns celebrating voluptuous figures, such as F&F and Dove, I wonder how that translates into women’s body positivity in real life and whether it really builds our self-esteem.

The NHS has researched self-esteem and shares the following definition and accompanying information: "Self-esteem is the opinion we have of ourselves, and low self-esteem often begins in childhood. Our teachers, friends, siblings, parents, and even the media send us positive and negative messages about ourselves."

They state that, "When we have healthy self-esteem, we tend to feel positive about ourselves and life in general. It makes us more able to deal with life’s ups and downs. However, when our self-esteem is low, we tend to see ourselves and our lives in a more negative and critical light. We also feel less able to take on the challenges that life throws at us."

Perhaps you’ve found it difficult to live up to other people’s expectations of you, or even your own? This can also have a negative effect on your self-esteem. It seems that some people are just more prone to negative thinking, while others set impossibly high standards for themselves and want everything to be perfect! Do you see a glass half full or half empty?

Research suggests that if you have low self-esteem or confidence, you may hide yourself away from social situations, stop trying new things, and avoid things you find challenging.

Maybe there are a few steps that you could take to help build your own self-esteem or that of a young person or loved one. Sport is a healthy and positive way to start the journey. Click here to find out what the NHS share about the benefits of exercise.

There is a lot of advice in the media offering to help improve your self-esteem, but I personally find that the Bible provides words of encouragement for me in Philippians 4:6-7 NIV, which says, “Do not be anxious about anything.” Friends, family, and I sometimes catch my negative words, and my thoughts then become actions and my face downcast. But when I cling onto God’s words, it breaks the cycle. How do you build positive self-esteem in yourself and others?

Why do you love rugby?

As the 2025 Men’s Six Nations (M6N) draws to a close, Rich, Co-CEO of Sportily and leader of the Sport and Faith team of coaches, has been asked a question many times: ‘Rich – why do you love rugby so much?’

"A seemingly simple question but perhaps not so simple to answer. I was fortunate to play rugby for 30 consecutive seasons, enjoy coaching now and, as my family will testify, am also a fan watching as many matches as I can from many different leagues, cups and tournaments around the world. Of course, the Six Nations is one of the best with it's history, the rivalry and the high quality (mostly!) rugby on display.

What I have noticed is that many people who ask questions then go and quickly answer them for you. Having asked me the question around rugby the answers that people give on my behalf are normally:

‘I bet you love the physicality.’ I do, and I do miss this now I cannot play. For my being physical and active are massively linked to my physical and mental health and general happiness. While rugby is a physical game it is, in fact, an invasion and evasion sport and what I love most of all about rugby is the creativity and co-creation that takes places on the pitch with so many moving parts and possibilities. As well as being physical beings I also believe we are creative beings made by the ultimate Creator. It is important I find space and time to be physical, to be active and to creative. I think this is true for all of us although it does not need to be through rugby.

‘I bet you love winning.’ I do love competition, but this is not the same as winning nor winning at all costs. For the youth teams I have coached I would much rather we played a competitive match and lost than an easy win. There are times we lost a match, but we were coaching for a longer-term win of player development or player retention. I believe that we are given gifts and talents by God, and we are called to do the very best with them. This takes effort and energy and drive, and this is similar to my competitive spirit. Being part of the team that established and leads Sportily is one example of where this competitive spirit has been utilised for the good of many others. I have been known to be over competitive, and it is in these moments I try to remember that, for me, I am playing/coaching for an audience of one no matter whether I win, lose or draw. For me, that audience is Jesus – creator of the universe.

‘I bet you love the beer.’ I do like a beer (alcoholic and non-alcoholic varieties are available) but it is always about the people. I have lived in Bristol, Southampton, Beverley, Liverpool and now Gloucestershire and in all these places I could turn up to ‘my’ rugby club and find some people to chat and spend time with. People I care about and who care about me. I believe we are created to be part of families, tribes, teams and not isolated people. As work and life gets busy, as I get drawn into my next book or crime drama or even doom scrolling, I need to remember that I need to get out and be with people. I love that this creation of communities runs through all that we do here at Sportily.

‘I bet you love that it gives you something to do.’ This question is always around people wanting to know about where my value and purpose comes from. Rugby gives me many things, as can be seen above, and it is even a place in where I find myself able to worship God, but my value is not in how well my team played or how I played or coached. My purpose is not in nor of rugby - my fullness of life comes only through God. I will try to remember this as I watch England play and as I stand watching the team I currently coach no matter how well they are playing."

Step into wellness: Embrace the season with a winter walk

Sport and Faith Coach Rachel took herself on a winter walk for her wellbeing and shares her thoughts below:

"I wouldn’t call myself sporty but I do like to be active. I love a long walk, whatever the weather. I connect walking boots on my feet with feeling good. A walk in torrential rain when wrapped up warm, snuggled inside a waterproof is one of my happy places. It’s been scientifically proven that walking in the rain is even better for us than walking when it’s sunny. Yes, the sunshine helps our vitamin D levels and boosts our mood, but breathing in wonderfully damp, droplet-laden air can relieve stress and increase our energy levels.

But even for me, an avid walker, getting out on a dull, dreary winter’s day when there are only a few hours of daylight and the paths underfoot are muddy can be a challenge. I can sit at my computer for hours and make every excuse as to why I’ll leave it another half an hour or why it can wait until tomorrow. Before I know it, the sun has set and it’s too late. Yet without fail, I know a walk will make me feel better, my head will be clearer and my body will be healthier.

When I go for a walk and give myself a bit more time, I like to be intentional about paying attention to my surroundings. I take notice of how my body feels: the cold air on my cheeks, the way my limbs warm up as I walk. I look closely at things which catch my eye: a droplet of water on a blade of grass, a green shoot poking up between paving slabs, the long shadow my body casts in the low winter sun. I listen to the sounds around me: the song of a robin from a branch or the scampering of a squirrel through dry leaves. I pause and touch a smooth leaf or the rough bark of a tree, noticing the different textures and the variety within the natural world.

As I move mindfully, my walk becomes much more than just ‘going for a walk’; it becomes a prayer. I wonder: what might God be saying to me through all that I notice? I ask: what could I do to take care of the area I live in? I give thanks: for my body, my senses, the beauty of the world around me.

This week, why not wrap up warm and head out for a winter walk, whether that’s around your housing estate, along a canal or into the forest. Go alone, take your dog, or find a friend to join you. Most of all, pay attention to how it makes you feel. I always come home smiling, inspired to make plans for when I can go out again. I hope you do too!"

Happy Christmas from everyone at Sportily

The story of Jesus' birth is celebrated by millions across the world during this special season. We will remember again the manger, the wise men, and the ornate gifts. We imagine the bright star the wise men followed. But another story unfolded. Sport and Faith Coach Christo shares this with us:

We read in Matthew 2:1-17 how the wise men stopped to talk with King Herod. The king asked them to report back to him when they found the location of Jesus' birth. King Herod had just one thing in mind – to harm Jesus. After the wise men made it to Jesus, they returned home on a different route because of a dream warning them not to return to Herod.

Jesus and his family had to flee to Egypt. The King gave orders to kill all the young boys in Bethlehem and surrounding areas. During this time, these communities would have likely been scared and overwhelmed. Peace was probably the last thing they were thinking about.

Whether you are experiencing joy or hardship this season, the message of Christmas speaks to all of us, regardless of our circumstances.

Do you experience the peace of Christmas? Or is it impossible? Circumstances, world events, relational tensions and grief can make this season difficult for some.

If you feel alone, here is the message of Christmas. You are not alone! At the time of His birth, people were expecting a Saviour who would be a fierce warrior who would use violence to bring justice and rescue God's people. While Jesus brought about justice and rescue, it was through love and compassion. So, instead of violence, he allowed Himself to be crucified on a cross to save us from our sin. He received all the pain and hate the world had to offer. With His resurrection, the power of violence, hatred and division suffered a fatal blow.

His life brought us peace only God can give, and He offers it to us:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

This peace isn't fake. It is not ignoring the problems in our world. This peace Jesus gives is a true gift that brings us closer to people around us. It calms our inner turmoil; it calms our busy minds, and it reminds us who is in control.

In a world where we face uncertainty, this message of peace offers hope and comfort, reminding us that we are not alone, no matter how difficult things may seem.

May we this holiday season fix our eyes on Jesus, remembering that He is in control and that we will experience this peace he promises to provide. May we as Christians be the people who bring a sense of calm, wholeness, renewal and hope to every situation and relationship in our lives.

What’s the real reason for the Christmas season?

Dare we say the Christmas season is upon us? Whether you put your decorations up in early November or wait until December 24th, we invite you to take a moment this Christmas to reflect on the real reason for the season. Sport and Faith Coach Ydson shares his thoughts:

"I've been on a journey lately, pondering the perfect moment to start listening to Christmas music and watching holiday movies. On November 7th, I had a moment that felt like an invitation into the season: while walking through the Highnam churchyard, I watched leaves gently drifting down, and suddenly, "The Snow is Falling" started playing in my mind. It's been on repeat ever since—a hint of the season’s arrival, like an inner nudge towards Christmas.

But as much as we look forward to the joy of gathering, exchanging gifts, and embracing festive traditions, let’s remember Jesus, the heart of the season. Many Christians believe that Christmas is the story of God’s immense love for us, made real through Jesus’s birth. This season is about more than cosy scenes and cheerful songs; it’s about pausing to reflect on God’s gift of hope, peace, and salvation through Christ.

So, as the early hints of Christmas appear around us, let’s be reminded of why we celebrate. Whether you’re already diving into the festivities or savouring the wait, may each moment draw us closer to the One who is the reason for this beautiful season. When do you feel that nudge toward the season?"

Did you know that there are fewer girls participating in Sport?

We caught up with Sport and Faith Leader, Jo, who's also our Female Participation lead, to learn more about the challenges girls face in sports and how her work aims to encourage their continued involvement.

"In my last blog (which you can read here), I discussed some of my personal experiences growing up in the world of gymnastics. As I move to my next blog, I thought it would be good to share some of the reasons why girls drop out of sport and what we can do to support them in getting involved.

Here are some reasons discovered by the Women’s Sports Foundation after 25 years of research:

Why girls drop out:

Lack of access:

Girls have 1.3 million fewer opportunities to play secondary school sports than boys. Limited physical education in schools and fewer sports opportunities at both secondary school and college mean girls often have to look elsewhere—which may not exist or may cost more. There is also often a lack of adequate playing facilities near their homes, making it more difficult for girls to engage in sports.

What we're doing to change this:

At Sportily, we offer a wide variety of inclusive opportunities, such as breakfast clubs, after-school clubs, Leadership Academies, Hangouts, and more—most of which are open to all, as we’re committed to ensuring girls feel fully welcome and included.

Why not #giveitago? Check out the website to see what activities are taking place in your area by clicking here.

Through sports, girls learn important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and confidence. Friendships and memories are made, alongside the physical benefits of staying active. Many of our Sportily clubs are free or have a small charge. If you'd like to join an event but are experiencing financial difficulties, we welcome you to email us, and we’ll do our utmost to provide a discount code.

Why they drop out:

Decreased quality of experience:

As girls grow up, the quality of their sports experience may decline. The facilities might not be as good as those for boys, and playing times may not be optimal. In some communities, quality, trained coaches are lacking, our coaches may focus more on boys’ programmes, which have more funding. Equipment and sports kits aren’t always provided and can be expensive which can diminish girls' enjoyment and growth in the sport. In short, sports just aren’t “fun” anymore.

What we're doing to change this:

At Sportily, we have trained sports coaches who use engaging games from the Boing Curriculum. We believe in helping each young person progress through tailored coaching and feedback that highlights strengths and areas for growth, enabling them to reach their full potential. We're committed to ensuring that girls have the same access to quality equipment, coaches, and resources as boys. Our coaches incorporate life skills and, at times, faith-based discussions that encourage young people to engage in meaningful conversations, building social and enquiry skills.

Why they drop out:

Lack of positive role models:

Today’s girls are constantly shown images focused on external beauty, rather than strong female athletic role models. For some, fitting into this mould seems more important than standing out. Peer pressure is challenging at any age, and without strong encouragement to participate in sports, girls may drop out altogether.

What we're doing to change this:

Sportily aims to inspire women to participate in sports, not only through our amazing female coaches but also by inviting successful and accomplished athletes to our events. This encourages girls to get more involved in sports and join a Sportily club—whether it’s netball, basketball, or one of our unique sports like Tchoukball. For more information, please email me.

Benefits of being active:

Let’s take a moment to remember what being active can do for us:

Boosts energy and improves mood through ‘feel-good hormones’

Enhances self-esteem and confidence

Reduces stress and anxiety

Decreases loneliness, especially in group activities

Helps with focus, calmness, and motivation

Physical activity can also improve:

General mood

Self-confidence

Sleep quality

Energy levels

If you have a young person who’s struggling to get involved in sport, encourage them to try us out. Our sports and faith coaches are energetic and committed to helping young people develop their full potential.

If you’ve read this article and found no sporting opportunities in your area, please email us using the link below and let us know what you’d be interested in.

Contact Sportily

Finally, if you are a young female leader and would like to receive a leadership ‘feel good’ starter pack then please do email me your name, location and the name of your local coach and I will pass them to your Sportily Coach to hand out to you over the next few weeks.

Pause for thought…Who could you encourage to move more and get involved in Sportily activities/events or a club near you?"

Celebrating World Teachers' Day: A Conversation with Simon on the Role of Sportily in Schools

In celebration of World Teachers' Day, Sport and Faith Coach Luke sat down with Simon, a primary school teacher with a unique background in sports coaching, to talk about his journey in education and the impact of Sportily in his school. Simon shares his experience of transitioning from coaching to full-time teaching, how Sportily has enriched the school’s physical education and faith-based activities, and why he believes Sportily is a valuable resource for schools.

Read on to hear Simon's insights and why he encourages others to get involved.

Luke: Hi Simon, thank you so much for agreeing to have a chat with me about school life and the involvement Sportily has had in that over the years. Can you give us a bit of background into your history as a teacher and what you did before that?

Simon: Hi Luke, not a problem, it's great to be able to share the work Sportily has been doing here. This is only my third year as a primary school teacher; before that, I was a sports coach for a local company and actually led sessions at this school. I then completed my training and now teach a class here and oversee the PE curriculum.

Luke: How have you found the difference between being a sports coach versus a classroom teacher? I know the school is glad that your coaching experience can be used to enrich the PE lessons.

Simon: It was quite a shift to go from 2-3 sessions a week per school to full-time teaching with the same class. You have to manage the children very differently now that my role is all-encompassing, more than small snippets throughout the week. PE is still my favourite class to teach, it's very rewarding to see the children progress week after week.

Luke: What is your history with Sportily? When did you first hear about us? And what is your favourite thing about us?

Simon: I first came across Sportily when it was called PSALMS (before it was rebranded) as I used to do sessions alongside the team as a sports coach. When I joined the school as a teacher, I met Luke and am very glad that we can use his expertise and experience to offer our pupils something more. My favourite thing about Sportily is the variety that they can provide, Luke has led sessions in Blind Football, Boccia, Tchoukball, Handball and more! Trying to keep children on task and excited can be hard work, but knowing there is something new and exciting to look forward to, always keeps them going.

Luke: You work in a Church of England School, how have you seen Sportily supporting that?

Simon: Yes, Sportily has been so intentional with providing something new when it comes to exploring the mystery of faith with the school children. Sometimes it can be difficult to communicate faith to children but Sportily facilitates it in so many ways that opens the door to all children having an opportunity to learn and experience.

Luke: Can you give the readers an example of what Sportily can offer? Really try to sell it to them.

Simon: ActiveRE has been a big hit with KS2; being able to learn about the Christian faith through games and activities. The most memorable for me was a lesson about the Holy Spirit, which was shown by doing a blindfolded obstacle course with my partner having to direct me to the finish line. It wasn’t easy, but it was very well received by the children.

We've also had Sportily Christmas, Easter, and Sports Days, which introduce faith to children in new, sometimes unconventional ways. These are supported by the local Church team who the children can speak to and build a relationship with.

Luke: I am glad to remember the blindfolded obstacle course! It is also one of my favourites. Last question: What would you say to another school that is considering using Sportily as a provider?

Simon: Just go for it, and at least have a trial day. They have so much to offer that I'm sure will stick with the children as they continue through their school life. Teaching is about trying to communicate something in a fun way that's easy to understand, and Sportily does that so well. We are grateful as a school that you are available to us.

Luke: Thank you for your time Simon, I appreciate the kind words. See you for Multisport Madness After School Club next week!

From Self-Doubt to Strong: My journey with Abbie’s Pilates classes

Have you thought about giving Pilates a go?

This glowing testimonial from Gabbey highlights just how impactful Abbie’s Pilates classes have been on her confidence, motivation, and overall well-being. It’s a perfect example of how the right instructor and supportive environment can lead to lasting change, both physically and mentally.

"I love working with Abbie! In the past, I haven’t had the confidence to start classes, let alone continue to attend. I believe that the low price, the fact it was aimed at mums, and that it was run by a Christian charity is what drew me in. Abbie is definitely the reason I have continued to attend!

Having started Pilates with Abbie (my first ever class) I felt confident enough to try to start another, class with a different provider. Despite this being opposite my house, I only attended two sessions before quitting. Whilst the other instructor was lovely, I didn’t feel motivated in her classes. I also felt confident enough to try a yoga class for the first time, but didn’t return. This behaviour is usual for me. I very often start new things and quickly lose interest.

Despite this being my usual modus operandi, I have now been attending Pilates with Abbie for over a year and the results have been dramatic! Not only have I taken an interest in my health and body, but my confidence has grown. Knowing that I am mentally and physically strong enough to perform these moves gives me strength in my everyday life. Abbie often motivates me by telling me that we are strong women. When I start to tire, she reminds me that this is my body working and that means it is getting stronger.

Abbie’s teaching style suits me perfectly. When Abbie tells me to perform a move, I know that I have to perform it. I am not afraid to say no to people, yet I would never dream of saying no to Abbie. I know that if she asks me to do something, she knows that I can. I often don’t believe it myself until afterwards, but I trust in Abbie’s knowledge and always feel safe.

When we work, I feel like I have worked hard. Physically, I feel the burn. Yet mentally, I feel revitalised.

I am so grateful to be able to work with Abbie. She obviously lives and breathes sport and fitness. She is extraordinarily knowledgeable and passionate. Her passion really sets her apart. Abbie often tells me how wonderful our bodies are and how much we can achieve. I genuinely feel like I am achieving!"

If you’ve ever struggled to stay consistent or lacked confidence in starting a new fitness routine, Gabbey’s story is proof that Abbie’s classes might be exactly what you need to transform your own journey.

The Olympics and Paralympics are here: Paris 2024

Sport and Faith Coach Christo welomes us into the Olympic season with some reflection.

"Friday the 26th of July is a big day in millions of people's diaries.

Why?

It marks the start of the Olympic and Paralympics Games Paris 2024.

Around 15,000 athletes will be part of the opening ceremony with hopes high of winning that gold for themselves and their country. After so many sacrifices, hours on hours of hard work and training, successes, and disappointments, those 15,000 Olympic athletes will compete in 329 events in 32 sports to see who the best of the best is. The Paralympics will see 4,000 athletes competing in 22 sports with 549 medals up for grabs.

When I think about the Olympics and participating in sports, I think about my own achievements. Well, I've never been on a level to qualify for the Olympics, but I did achieve a few amazing successes in running and bodybuilding. But what I realized over the years is that I'm not a champion because I achieved gold or silver medals but because I never gave up. And if I did give up, I found a way to lift my head and try again.

This is why I love sports and working with people to do sports and any physical activity. It's not about coming first, but about understanding that we are all winners and that we can achieve so much more in our lives than we realize. It is about small steps, about trying something new, about learning, about being part of something, yes, it's about finding that champion inside of you.

Enjoy the Olympics Paris 2024 and go out and try something new!"

Why is women’s participation in sport lower than men’s?

Female participation in sport is still significantly lower than male for a variety of reasons. Sport and Faith Leader Jo is our Female Participation Lead and is focused on getting girls involved in and enjoying sport.

Keep reading to find hear about her experiences growing up.

"As a child, I spent many precious hours training to be a gymnast. Two evenings of gymnastics and conditioning exercises followed by two evenings of ballet, not to mention Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons spent practicing routines and tumbles! Looking back, I felt fortunate to spend 10 years of my life, from the age of 5, actively engaged in sport; often competing in local and County competitions. I measured my own success by the number of trophies, gold, silver and bronze medals I had achieved. I also felt the disappointment of not winning, leading to a feeling of failure; where there seemed little comfort in family and friends saying that it was okay if I had done my best.

Over 30 years on, I still remember that my body image was a huge contributing factor to my mental health and wellbeing as I approached my teen years. Clingy, figure hugging leotards sometimes led me to agonise over my body shape and compare myself with other girls; leading me into a negative thought process that maybe ‘I was too curvy’ or ‘too athletic’ to be good enough. Coupled with the competitiveness of the amateur gymnastics world where being good at your sport can often lead to jealousy and bullying-therefore, despite my passion for gymnastics life could sometimes be tough and a little isolating!

Self-image and self-esteem seemed to be everything to me back then, therefore, I wondered how much things had really changed today. This led me to research the reasons why women’s participation in sport is lower than men as there are 313,600 fewer women than men who are regularly active according to Gender | Sport England’s statistics.

There have been many polls undertaken to identify why girls participation is lower. The Women’s Sport Foundation identified that young girls are ‘conditioned at an early age to shy away from sport due to the fact that they can be perceived as being unfeminine, or are afraid of failure or being teased’. This aligns with my lived experience during my youth.

I suppose the questions to consider next are… what does this look like in the community where I work? Are young girls accessing after school sports clubs and if not why not? Early indications with my local secondary school seem to indicate that female participation is low and it is difficult to attract young females to engage in after school sports.

Therefore, what can I do to have a positive impact on fostering a love of sport in those young girls who may already feel that sport is not for them?

Find out more in my continuing Blogs through the course of 2024, as I journey to try and increase girls participation in sport across the Sportily community."

When will Netball become a professional sport?

Victoria, one of our Sport and Faith Apprentices, is a huge fan of both playing and watching netball. Her dedication to the sport mirrors the passion and commitment seen in many women's sports, where record-breaking, inspirational athletes often balance full-time jobs alongside their athletic pursuits.

This raises a critical question: when will these talented women get the recognition and support they deserve, allowing netball to flourish as a professional sport? Keep reading to here what she thinks:

"Friday and Saturday nights mean fast-paced, nail-biting matches in the UK’s Netball Super League between 10 dynamic and talented teams. I love settling down with a cup of tea after a long day at work to enjoy these athletes showcasing their skills on the court. Despite their impressive performances, many of these players have come straight from long days of balancing training and their careers.

While some fortunate players receive sponsorships or are part of the England Roses Pathway, most juggle full-time jobs or studying with their extensive training, conditioning, and match commitments. Despite England's success in reaching the final of the 2023 Netball World Cup, netball is still only considered a professional sport in Australia and New Zealand. This is why players like Fran Williams and Helen Housby have moved overseas to focus on netball full-time.

This situation raises an important question: why isn’t netball in England taking its rightful place as a fully supported and funded professional sport? England Netball is actively working towards this goal with programs such as Walking Netball, NetballHer, and See Us Now, which support various communities and promote netball across the country. These initiatives include NSL players discussing their paths to semi-professional netball, their hopes for the future, body image, mental health, and the challenges they face balancing their jobs with the increasing publicity of being in the NSL.

This year, the BBC and SkySports began broadcasting two out of five matches each week, following the success of the World Cup. This is a brilliant step forward for promoting netball in the UK. However, compared to the number of League 2 football matches shown, there is still much work to be done. Netball might not yet have the same number of fans or the long history of sports like football and rugby, but the players demonstrate the same determination and grit in their training, travel, gameplay, and discipline. The key difference lies in the lack of secure facilities, funding, and time.

Netball being recognized as a professional sport would benefit not only the current professionals but also those growing up with the sport. It would offer young players a viable career option and not just a hobby for Friday nights. This recognition is also crucial for aspiring coaches and umpires.

As a player, umpire, and recent coach, I have seen firsthand how netball brings people together, supports teammates through tough times, and boosts confidence. Netball is not just a sport you played in secondary school and vaguely remember; it's a physical, tactical, and strong game that challenges you to grow, supported by a vibrant community of players, coaches, umpires, and sideline supporters. It truly deserves to be recognized as a professional sport."

Adam's Mental Health Journey

For World Mental Health Week 2024, we caught up with Sportily Apprentice Adam to hear about his journey with his mental health. His diagnosis of Erb's Palsy has brought on its own unique challenges while growing up, but he hopes that by sharing his story, others will know that they are not alone.

"Growing up, I'd describe my childhood as pretty typical: two loving parents and an older sister. Despite my disability, my parents always encouraged me to get stuck in with other kids my age, treating me no differently. They recognized my challenges and were always there to lend a hand or show me a new approach.

It wasn't until primary school that I began to grasp my differences. Hearing comments like, "You need two hands for this," had a significant impact on me as I navigated learning. It made me try twice as hard to do things as I always felt two steps behind everyone, which has been the theme of most of my life. I hold myself to standards that are way too high to maintain and beat myself up if I don’t perform at a level I think I should be at.

It took me 20 years to see my disability as a blessing rather than something to hold me back, but I still struggle with anxiety and the feeling of people staring and talking about it. I would say that my mental health has struggled because of being “different” to most people. But I think it has made me stronger and because of it, I strive to participate in activities like everyone else, even if my approach may differ or require more time. Despite my fear of asking for help, fearing failure or being perceived as incapable due to my impairment, I refuse to give up.

I will forever be grateful for my amazing family and support worker who treat me just like everyone else, never allowing me to feel inadequate or different. I've achieved more than I ever thought possible and take pride in my accomplishments. Though I still face challenges, I'm excited for this next chapter of my life."

Mark's Mental Health Journey

For World Mental Health Day 2023, we sat down with Mark who was a Sport and Faith Coach for us at the time.

He shared a moving story of his struggles with mental health which you can read here.

For Mental Health Awareness Week 2024, we asked him to reflect on how it felt to share his story with some of the young people we work with and the impact it had on the people around him.

If you are struggling with anything similar or any aspect of your own mental health, please do find a trusted friend or adult to speak to. At the bottom of this article, we have listed a selection of mental health charities and how you can contact them.

"At TRAC 2023 (our summer residential), I did a mental health seminar for the first time in my life. I’d shared my journey prior to this with friends and those who I felt needed to hear it. I’d even preached on it in some of my sermons, but didn’t go into great depth.

What have I learned from doing this?

The biggest lesson I’ve learnt is that I’m truly not alone. There’s a saying – 'vulnerability breeds vulnerability'. What I’ve found is by me not hiding away from my struggles but sharing them with others, it gives them permission to do the same. I’ve found so many people are struggling in secret or downplay their emotions.

We’re all on the mental health spectrum somewhere and where we are will alter throughout our lives. When I was younger, guys in particular didn’t share their emotions – it wasn’t seen as ‘masculine’ or ‘cool.’ I’m glad that this isn't the case as much today, with there being more awareness of mental health struggles. But the challenge for me is to not remain silent. Especially having been a voice of hope, encouragement, living testimony and source of light to others, I have to remember to check in with myself regularly.

Whenever I talk about mental health with young people, I normally do an anonymous Q&A session. The questions that get submitted are heartbreaking and show me the severity of the battles we’re facing. I’ve resolved in my life not to stay silent over my battles but to talk openly about them to others when appropriate. To be vulnerable, to show the scars on my heart – to say I still have days I don’t want to get out of bed and feel like the world is crumbling around me.

We need to speak out and let others know it’s okay.

The overwhelming feedback I’ve received from doing this – is people being extremely grateful and opening up back to me saying I’ve never talked like this to anyone before. I remember back in 2020 I read a bloggers post on their mental health journey. They battled with the exact same things I did, but by them being so vulnerable, open and even approachable as I corresponded in emails with them – they gave me something I could never repay them for – Hope. I had hope if they got better so can I.

So let me encourage you – it can be vulnerable and scary – but you may be the key to someone else’s breakthrough and be the hope they need."

Egg-straordinary Easter: Unwrapping faith, friendship, and fun!

Sport and Faith Leader, Jo takes us through the meaning of Easter and how it's inspiring us at our holiday clubs this year.

"As I unwrap another cream egg, I’m reminded of the reason for the season. The fundamental truth behind our faith and one that breaks the mould! There is no greater story in the history of humanity than that of Holy Week. A story of good news and hope that is truly miraculous; yet strewn with betrayal, deceit and brutality.

As we wind through the 8-day Easter story during our 2-day holiday club, our young people will encounter the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Through sport, craft, drama and actively solving clues they will find out about how these historic events unfolded. They will also have the opportunity to build new friendships, enjoy good company, eat hot food and talk life!

Despite it being around 2000 years after Jesus died on the cross, His death and resurrection is just as relevant today; in 1 Corinthians 15:14, Paul states “And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.” Therefore, It’s completely useless to believe in a god who isn’t powerful enough to raise himself from the dead. That’s what sets Jesus apart from false gods and prophets.

As I ponder the Easter story, I wonder what life might have been like back in Jesus’ time without technology, petrol-powered or electric transport and mobile phones to spread the news. Yet, today people all over the world know about His death and celebrate Good Friday as a symbol of Hope and of an eternal future.

I also wonder what it would have been like to have been one of the many witnesses to have seen Jesus walking around after his death. How would you have reacted? Would you have been like Thomas (aka Doubting Thomas) who wanted to put his fingers in Jesus’ wounds or would you have thrown yourself down and worshipped him in reverence and fear as the true King and Son of God?

On a personal note, It’s a real privilege for me to follow Jesus and to be able to share the good news with the young people and the wider community who engage with Sportily.

This Easter, as you spend time with friends and family why not make room for Jesus? Why not spend some time with him in prayer, dig out your Bible (there are some excellent stories) and why not let him speak to you whilst you get to know his life story better!

Finally, just as the spring signifies new life; I’m reminded that the chocolate egg signifies the empty tomb. As Christians, we believe that Jesus has risen and that we can choose to have a real relationship with Him as we believe that he is alive!

Wishing you all a blessed Easter 2024!"

What your World Book Day Character says about you

For World Book Day this year, Sport and Faith Coach John wanted to find out how young people link reading and sports together.

"Who is your World Book Day Character?

Over the last couple of weeks, many households have gone through the annual hunt for the perfect costume to wear for seemingly the most popular dress-up day of the year.

Would the choice help reveal something about the sportiness of the wearer? Would books about sports lead to an increase in interest in reading or indeed be inspirational in promoting sports? And finally, what do children think it says about sport in the Bible?

With the help of children throughout the Primary QuEST schools, I endeavoured to find out.

What we did:

Fifty children throughout the trust took part in a survey, where they were asked about World Book Day characters, and then asked to give their opinion on some of my old football novels that I read at their age, and other sports books I was able to find in their school libraries. They compared if they would have an impact on their motivation for reading or playing sport, and we finished by asking how sport was mentioned in the Bible.

Starting points:

Of the fifty children, 21 were girls and 29 boys. They were from both Key Stage 1 & 2 with an average age of just under 9 years old. 92% identified as sporty compared with 68% who would describe themselves as big readers. This was interesting for the fact that these children found it far easier to identify something about themselves that was sporty, with their feelings about their ability to read coming across as far more entrenched (this wasn’t just to impress their PE teacher!).

Character Studies:

There were a range of categories that recurred in their costume choice. 22% of both boys and girls chose to dress as footballers based on real-life players. Lots of the comments pointed to role models being copied: “Obviously good at sport” and one even ran down Cristiano Ronaldo’s career as “Skills at Man Utd now goals, goals, goals!”

The next most popular were Harry Potter and Princess characters. Indeed almost all were identified as sporty apart from the Wimpy Kid or Vampire (the problem with the vampire was he was likely to be sent off for biting!). The princesses provided intriguing observations: “She wouldn’t be good at sport, because she couldn’t get her dress muddy,” and Cinderella who would likely lose her shoe.

Reading or Sport

For the impact of reading sports books, a definite pattern revealed itself. There were those with football enthusiasm, who were clearly excited by the sports books. “This will help me get better at football,” and “If you get me one about Ronaldo I would read it 100 times!”

Others separated reading and sports as activities. One particularly sporty boy observed “It's just not what I want to read about,” with others commenting that it would have little impact on their reading unless they were about more than just football.

Sport & the Bible

64% didn’t think that sport was mentioned in the Bible. One voiced this rather strongly: “Sport has nothing to do with God.”

Those who did think it was mentioned showed good lateral thinking from the stories they had heard in various assemblies. They mentioned stories such as Jesus walking in the desert or into Jerusalem as examples of physical activity. There would have been swimming when Jesus walked on water and “Baptism must have some swimming,” as well.

School has clearly had an impact on their thinking as many thought it might include that sport was good for you. Children at the top of the age range also made links between teaching from the Bible and expected behaviour: it teaches you “Sportsmanship, and not be unhumble or to boast.”

One football enthusiast thought the Bible might tell you about great footballers from the past like Zidane or Pele. If only there was a great role model hidden within its pages, who could inspire great feats for the next set of readers!"

Flipping fantastic, the batter way to celebrate Pancake Day!

We chatted with Sport and Faith Leader for Forest of Dean, Adam about his thoughts on Pancake Day.

Flour. Eggs. Milk.

Whisk it.

Fry it.

Top it.

Eat it.

That’s the lifecycle of a pancake! A traditional feast from three humble ingredients consumed with sweet or savoury toppings before many give up something for forty days in the lead up to Easter celebrations.

My dog, Champ, holds the (unverified) Guinness World Record for eating a pancake - one pancake day we were making pancakes and my daughter, being just over two years old, wanted to try and flip a pancake, so as I crouched down behind her to assist with a flip, and as we tossed the pancake in the air, up bounced our all-ears English springer, who lept with his mouth wide open to gobble up the pancake which was in midair, in one single glup! From the pan to the tummy in 0.26secs!

Pancake Day, also known by its other name, Shrove Tuesday, is the event that starts getting us ready for Easter. In some Christian traditions, people will give up something as they prepare themselves for Easter, whereas other Christian traditions might begin a new habit; both have the same focus: the aim to bring the person closer to God.

In the lead-up to this Pancake Day, I wonder if you are planning or thinking of giving up something or starting something. A bit like my dog, Champ, he was ready to jump and grab that pancake - have you taken some time to plan what you will do? Here are three simple thoughts to help you get started:

Start Small; take small, incremental steps to the bigger goal.

Be accountable; tell a friend or family member to help you stick to it.

Have Fun; don’t stress the small stuff; if you mess up, laugh and carry on!

And most importantly, plan your pancake toppings wisely! Whether it's classic lemon and sugar, delicious Nutella and banana, or something savoury, Pancake Day is a time to get together with loved ones to enjoy good food and share laughter and joy.

Sportily takes on Couch to 5km

Sport and Faith Coach Luke Campbell heads up our Couch to 5km sessions in Thameshead which can be found here. We checked in with him to find out more about why he enjoys it.

There is a beauty with running that, I think, is unlike any sport. It's raw and natural, but individual to the athlete and can be interpreted as one sees fit. There are many people I know who can run 20 miles at the drop of a hat, others who would only think of covering that distance in a car. Like anything in life, everyone starts as a beginner, and no one gets good by accident.

The original Couch To 5km (C25km) was set up in 1996 but people have been learning to run long before then. It follows a training plan that works on the basis of progressive overload; incrementally increasing the demand/force over a period of time which your body adapts to. The same idea works with lifting weights or holding your breath. As you begin to run, your body will be put under new stresses and over time it will adapt by getting stronger and can tolerate more stress. This is how marathon runners build up to consistently running 100 miles a week, it takes months!

The great thing about C25km is that everyone is in the same boat (or starts on the same couch). It's surrounded by community that's built by overcoming challenges together and having an understanding of what the person next to you is going through. If you do C25km in a group, you'll start off as strangers but finish week 10 as friends.

While starting the group in January and running in the dark with very low temperatures may sound like a bad idea, the feeling of sitting down in the warm pub with a hot chocolate in your hand makes it all worth it. At Sportily we #playsportstalklife; and we put the same amount of effort into both of these. We see having a conversation about your day as just as important as going for a run.

So, here’s the sign you were looking for; to go out and find a local running group or grab some friends and embark on this challenge together. When you look back on this in 5 years’ time, you won’t remember how far or how fast you could run, but you will remember how running as part of a community made you feel.

#giveitago, and if you don’t like it, there are another 100 sports and activities for you to try.

Let's chat: World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day is coming up this week, so we sat down with Mark, Sport and Faith Coach here at Sportily to chat about his journey with mental health.

If you are struggling with anything similar or any aspect of your own mental health, please do find a trusted friend or adult to speak to. At the bottom of this article, we have listed a selection of mental health charities and how you can contact them.

When did it start?

Mark: 'From as young as I can remember I struggled with my mental health. Body image seemed so important when I was younger, and I didn’t feel like I fit in with social norms at school. I often found myself comparing how my school uniform looked on me vs my friends, it always seemed to fit them better. This led to me developing Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) which resulted in me excessively exercising, obsessively watching my diet and avoiding social situations due to fears I had about my physique.'

How did that affect you as you got older?

'In 2017 I had a severe breakdown, was diagnosed with OCD and became very unwell to the point of needing to be hospitalised on several occasions.

Through this period I felt that life was completely dark, hopeless and empty. I even stopped doing the things I used to enjoy such as hanging out with friends and my martial arts.'

What kept you going during this period?

'Two quotes that greatly helped me through this season were ‘When you’re going through hell keep walking’ (Winston Churchill), and ‘The most courageous thing I ever did was keep on living when I didn’t want to.’

I found that both quotes reminded me that mental health recovery is a journey. It doesn’t change overnight, and you need to keep walking. There were many days I wanted to give in, but held onto my faith in God believing that He would walk with me through my valley. I constantly reminded myself that better days were ahead and that I was not in this fight alone. I remembered I had to take every day hour by hour not even day by day, and I was determined to be courageous in the face of fear.

In 2019, I decided that I would keep fighting my illness even if it meant walking through hell. I had tried many therapists, medication and other treatment options – but nothing seemed to be working.

I knew I had to keep fighting my illness because this battle was not just about me. Sadly many of my friends passed away due to their struggles with mental health, so I wanted to fight on for their memories and to be a light in other people’s darkness. I can truly say today I’m so glad I made that decision because life is so different now and I’m incredibly privileged to be able to walk with others who are struggling in similar ways with their mental health.'

What changed?

'In 2021, I was admitted to the National OCD and BDD Ward in London. Whilst there, my therapist massively helped me, got me on an upward recovery trajectory for the first time in years and gave me the roadmap to get my life back. I left the hospital in 2022 and with the help of God and my Christian faith, I have continued to invest in my mental health and today am doing much better. Knowing God loves me and is always there for me has been significant for me.'

What key message helped you through this difficult time in your life?

'My encouragement to anyone facing a mental health battle, whatever it may be, is that there is hope. You may not see it right now, you likely don’t feel it but remember, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. There are so many of us on the journey with you.

I’ve always found being around others on the journey has helped me massively. Whether that’s by meeting them in a hospital setting, mental health community group, social media platform, or even just talking to my friends. My friends have been lifelines for me in the most difficult of circumstances.'

What now?

'I wish I could end this article by saying I’m 100% recovered and well now, but that’s not my story. I still take medication, need therapy, and have good and bad days – but I’ve learnt coping strategies to help keep me well and recognise when I need to reach out for help. I’m still trusting God that one day I will be completely healed of my OCD illness, but I’ve determined whether that day comes or not – this battle is not just about me. This battle is not just about you. We’re in this together and there’s a whole world out there that needs to hear your story too. Will you join me in this fight?'

Sportily is proud to be able to offer exciting placement opportunities to university students undertaking sports, fitness, sports science, youthwork or theology based degree courses.

Undertaking a placement with Sportily will not only be a great experience for you and an opportunity to learn new skills within the workplace, but a chance for you to make a tangible difference in the lives of those you encounter through the work of the charity.

Rachel undertook a 12 month, full-time placement with us in 2022/23 as part of her BA in Sport and Exercise Science at Nottingham Trent University.

Rachel writes:

"I've always been passionate about sports, representing my school and local clubs in football, netball and hockey and serving as a School Sports Leader.

Having had previous rewarding experiences delivering holiday club programmes to young children, I was looking for a placement year opportunity where I could further develop my skills in planning and coaching sports activities that contribute towards children and young people developing positive mental and physical well-being. Sportily looked like a great fit.

I’ve really loved my year. Building relationships with the children I’ve worked with and working alongside such a supportive and encouraging team who have really invested in me in a multitude of ways have been real highlights for me.

I’ve gained invaluable on the job work experience and been involved in a huge variety of different aspects of sports coaching with children and young people in a faith based context. It’s been such a privilege to make a tangible difference in the lives of those I’ve worked with, whilst having such great fun throughout.

If you’re considering a placement year, I would thoroughly recommend Sportily to you."

Bushcraft, what is it?

Bushcraft is an activity that’s a little different from everything else we do here at Sportily.

Sport and Faith Trainee Will is here to talk to us about what it involves.

"It’s unique, and that’s part of what I enjoy about it. It takes us out of our usual environment – whether that’s home, school, or holiday club – and out into the woods, which lends a whole different atmosphere to a session. It’s an opportunity to utilize the nature that’s all around us, although of course you have to be careful to be sustainable – something that bushcraft prioritises."

If you wanted to try Bushcraft at home, it’s actually not as difficult as you might think!

"You need a space to do it in, but that can be as simple as a clear space at the bottom of the garden, a clearing in some trees near your house, anything like that.

There, you can have a look around and find some fallen wood – which is the best way because it means you don’t damage nature!

A great way to start is by building a shelter or den out of logs and using leaves to cover it up – whilst you might get a little cold, you could even spend the night in one of those (I spent a weekend in one once, and it was great fun!).

At Sportily, the most common Bushcraft activity we run is Shelter Building.

In the Forest of Dean, we took a group out and built three different shelters, all for different animals – they need shelters just as much as us!

We built them out of fallen wood, rope, and a sheet – and they all held up! The young people all had a great time getting out into nature, and so did we.

If you’re interested in nature or just fancy a change, why not give it a try?"

We don't currently have any scheduled bushcraft sessions coming up so make sure you keep an eye out for when we have more.

In the meantime, why not do what Will has suggested? Make sure you take photos and tag us in them on social media if you do!

We love our volunteers

It's National Volunteers Week and as a charity that couldn't do what we do without our volunteers, we wanted to share a story from Leigh, who started off as a volunteer and is now a proud trustee and vital part of the Sportily team.

Hear from her below:

Have you volunteered anywhere else before joining Sportily?

"I was the Group Scout leader for the first Stonehouse Scouts for ten years, as well as being an elected town councillor for five years where I sat on the business and finance committee as the deputy conveyancer, and as a member of the working parties for youth provision and recreation.

I also served as a director and trustee for All Pulling Together, a community hub located in Park Estate and held the role for 3 years having volunteered for 2 years prior."

What made you want to start volunteering for Sportily?

"I began volunteering for Psalms for 3 years before it became Sportily, and when I moved to Hunts Grove [from Stonehouse], I was asked if I would support Tim as a volunteer for the youth hangout."

Where do you volunteer and what do you do?

"I volunteer at Sportily youth hangout in Hunts Grove, which is located opposite my home at the local primary school.

It's been two years since I started volunteering with Sportily in Hunts Grove, and my role involves assisting with the general running of the sessions, interacting with the young people, and inquiring about their week."

What do you love about it?

"I enjoy working with young people in various capacities, as they possess a refreshing perspective that hasn't been tainted by life's experiences. Their enthusiasm and aspirations serve as a great source of motivation."

What made you decide to become a trustee and what new responsibilities do you have?

"I strongly believe that God led me to make this decision. The work that Sportily and its youth workers do significantly impacts the young people in our community, and I wanted to be more involved. I've taken on a supporting role where I can use my life experiences and achievements to make a positive difference whilst still being able to work full-time in my day job.

As a trustee, I have numerous responsibilities that I cannot list exhaustively. However, I can summarise by stating that my primary role entails ensuring that the youth in our community are mentored by individuals with high moral standards and Christian values as they strive to introduce God and the Christian faith through sports and communal interactions with children and young people."

Wow, doesn't that sound epic?

If you're interested in finding out more about becoming a part of the Sportily volunteering team, click here.

Volunteers, have you sent your RSVP to our summer gathering? We'd love to have you so make sure you let us know if you can make it. Please email hello@sportily.org.uk if you didn't receive an invite and you were expecting to.

It's the season for shooting hoops

It's NBA season across the pond but we don't let the distance stop us from being inspired by basketball's biggest tournament of the year.

We caught up with Luke and Ydson - two of our Sport and Faith Coaches to hear their thoughts and how they're using it to inspire their sessions.

Luke: ‘’Hey everyone, if you’re a basketball fan, you’ve come to the right place!

Me and my colleague Ydson love basketball a lot, and when I say a lot, I mean we really really love basketball.

Ydson: You can say that again bro. I absolutely agree. Luke, what’s your favourite NBA team again?

L: Definitely the Goldenstate Warriors man, they've been doing so well this season and have made it all the way to the NBA Playoffs. I’m sure this year they can win the whole playoffs. We have the best 3 pt shooter in the NBA, Steph Curry, who brings his A-game, every game, and basically never misses. He scored 30 pts last game against the Sacramento Kings, contributing to a great playoff win.

It's not just him but the whole team is great, 'cus they give it their all and are working so hard to get that W (win, for those who aren't up-to-date with the youth slang!).

Y: I like your passion for Goldenstate, but I’d have to disagree with you there. Miami Heat is going for that championship, and we'll get the W in the end.

Bro, look at Jimmy Butler, just last Wednesday he had his highest-scoring game ever with the Heat, a huge 56 points. He's a scoring machine, and his hard work and skill are certainly going to help us win this year.

Yes, you have a great 3pt shooter but can your players rack up as many points as Jimmy, I don’t think so!

L: Those are valid points, so we’ll just have to wait and see. But they don’t call Goldenstate the ‘W squad’ for nothing mate. I know they're gonna win!

Y: In all honesty, it's difficult to predict where the basketball playoffs will go based on recent performances. We can, however, highlight the impact of players like Jimmy Butler, who tends to play his best game during the playoffs, his competitive side really coming out.

L: Actually I do see that, The playoffs bring the best out of him.

Y: Relating all this to our Basketball sessions at Sportily, like the NBA players in the playoffs we always give our all, and encourage each other during every session, even when faced with challenges.

Whenever someone in the session misses a shot, we make sure we all encourage that person that they don’t have to give up as it's not about being the perfect player, but about being determined and always giving it your all.

L: It's all about teamwork and communication, skills that are essential in all parts of life.

Y: So next time you’re at a Sportily basketball session, listen out for encouragement because you gonna hear a lot of it!

L: Well said Yds!

Both: Sportily over and out!"
